My Sunday wish for you: become a team! I got invited to join a sailing race. And I know nothing much about sailing. It was obviously just for fun and maybe that is one of the best ways for teams to thrive. Catherine, who invited me, is a fascinating person. She loves Saudi Arabia, has even been here as a child. She is one of those people, who simply wants to build and help. And she is an experienced sailor and instructor. We were a mixed bunch. Some with big boat racing experience, some beginners like myself. In my first race I was tasked to handle the main, while a colleague with a bit more experience was at the helm. Our skipper handled the spinnaker, the balance and us in case we made mistakes. I was a bit overwhelmed by the many words I did not know. Luv, tack, jibe, … The skipper and my teammate were kind, explained, when there was time, and gave me clear and simple orders. In no time at all, we felt like a team: common goal, different roles, mutual support. And fun. It made me think, that there are many ways to work in a team. And the experience is invariably better, than attempting things alone. Not just better results, better feeling. I will be seeking out more opportunities to team up. Sometimes momentarily just for a race, sometimes longer term like at work. Of course it takes intent and sometimes even giving up, like I give up my way for the way of the team. It takes generosity, because a team only forms, when people give. It takes some communication skills coupled with respect and the just mentioned generosity. Only that way can we give and receive the necessary feedback to work better as a team. But … what we get out is so absolutely worth it. So my wish for all of us: become a team in whatever you are trying to achieve. It will be better that way and feel better too. Image of a yellow, light brown sandy beach before a bright blue sky. Being part of team is all about common goals, whether in a personal or professional relationship. When we can integrate different perspectives and create a beautiful mosaic that addresses the different aspects of our common mission, we are destined to achieve a better outcome. That to me is the value and purpose of DEI. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is not just a buzz word for me, it is the essence of better results. Seeing the whole picture and its repercussions leads to socially sustainable solutions benefiting all of us. Katja Rieger this is a great example of having a common goal under the constraints of being physically interdependent. Great.

6moWhether it's a sailing race or a work project, the experience is always better when we work together toward a common goal isn't it Katja? It reminds us of the power of connection, how connecting with others, supporting each other, and working as a team can lead to incredible outcomes and a wonderful sense of fulfilment. It's a great reminder that we're stronger together.
