Little more than 6 years ago, myself, João Mariares de Vasconcelos and 3 others (joined shortly after by Patrícia Matos) started LGG Advisors in an office the size of a small living room, with the idea of providing top-quality corporate finance services from Portugal to clients abroad. We had no clients and revenue to start with. None of us was bringing clients from previous jobs. We had no external investors or financing. But we had a very strong will to succeed. We worked hard, took a very lean approach and became very client-centric. Clients became our entire focus, we had to understand what they needed, adapt to their way of doing things and be humble enough to recognize when we were wrong. Since then it has been an incredible journey. Growth was never meant to be a goal in itself, but rather a means to attain other more important goals. Growth brought opportunities for us to hire talent, diversify to other services and markets and reward those that most contributed to our success. Also, allowed us to develop our infrastructure and support services that in turn helped us become more professional. A couple of things I have learned throughout the way: · The title of CEO doesn’t really mean anything, you have to be able to roll-up your sleeves and do the work nobody wants to do · When scaling-up it’s all about the team – one man show firms don’t survive · Celebrate success but don’t ignore failures – one-sided views of your business can lead you to overlook what needs to be improved · People gather around mission-led organisations – they want to feel they are contributing to a meaningful collective goal · Hire the best talent and empower them – be results-oriented rather than micro-managing their time or work It has been an absolute honour to work with everyone that contributed to where we are today, knowing that this is still the beginning and there is much more to be achieved. Also, a word to our clients to thank them for their trust, it is a privilege to work and learn from you every day.

Instead of the singular form of recognition of the past, there is now differentiated recognition for organisations at various stages of their corporate purpose journey.
