Top Inbound Trends and Outbound Shifts in 2023 Migration The U-Haul Growth Index for 2023 highlights the top 10 states for growth, based on the largest numbers of movers headed to those states using one-way U-Haul equipment rentals. Texas topped the list, with Florida close behind—both holding their spots for the third consecutive year—followed by North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Meanwhile, United Van Lines has released its 47th Annual National Movers Study, with insights based on the company’s exclusive data for customers’ state-to-state migration patterns. The study reveals which states and regions had the highest numbers for inbound and outbound moves in 2023. And the West topped the outbound list as Americans moved south and east to less expensive metros with comparable amenities. 🚛 Driver Recruiting market: how will it evolve and what does that mean for carriers? 🚛 Recruiting qualified drivers has become notably easier in the past 6-8 quarters due to the current freight recession. However, this temporary relief shouldn't mislead us. The American Transportation Research Institute annual "Issues List" clearly shows how the driver shortage, and its impact on the recruiting market, has only gotten worse over the years (Covid or no Covid). The graph below shows how the issue has moved up in the carrier consideration over the last 15 years. From being the #4 concern between '09-'13, to being the uncontested #1 issue for 5 years in a row ('16-'21). With analysts predicting that the freight market will turn in the coming 2-3 quarters, it is crucial for carriers to future proof their recruiting operation in advance of the market shift.
