"Conservation is not just about wildlife; it is also about people". ~ #KAZAHeadsofStateSummit insight. The Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) is home to more than half of the world's Savannah elephant population, with an estimated 227,900 elephants as per the 2022 KAZA Elephant Survey bit.ly/3Ina0iu. While KAZA TFCA Partner States continue to celebrate this conservation triumph, the Partner States are also cognisant of the increased human-elephant conflict that comes with this success, as the TFCA is a coexistence landscape with a diverse range of wildlife, shared with 2.5–3 million people. To enable communities and elephants to co-exist, the KAZA TFCA Partners States working closely with front line communities, and development partners across the landscape, are striving to address the core causes of human-elephant conflict, putting in place resilient and healthy coexistence systems that are contributing to the preservation of both communities and elephants in the KAZA TFCA. #2024WorldElephantDay!

On this #WorldElephantDay, we’re celebrating the recent groundbreaking to construct Sri Lanka's first wildlife underpass! It will provide safe passage under a railway at the site of past collisions between trains and endangered Asian elephants. We’re excited that the design of this crossing incorporated guidance from the ‘Handbook to Mitigate the Impacts of Roads and Railways on Asian Elephants,’ published by the Asian Elephant Transport Working Group with support from the Center for Large Landscape Conservation, World Wildlife Fund, Whitley Fund for Nature, and the USAID-funded ALIGN Project. As the conservation arm of Mandai Wildlife Group, Mandai Nature embraces the comprehensive approach that combines protecting animals in the wild with caring for them in zoos. Together, these efforts are vital for ensuring the survival of wildlife. In a recent news article, our CEO, Dr. Sonja Luz, emphasises the significance of the One Plan Approach to species conservation. This collaborative strategy unites all stakeholders in recognising the need for intervention and outlines the necessary actions from all parties involved. By focusing on efforts such as habitat protection, ongoing monitoring, and research, as well as collaborating with governments, zoos, conservation organisations, and local communities, we can effectively work to reverse population declines and safeguard our planet's precious wildlife. Mala are making a comeback 💪 The Rufous hare-wallaby (Mala) was once widespread and abundant across semi-arid Australia. Sadly, the last wild population in central Australia went extinct in the early 1990s. In 2017, we released a founding population of 27 individuals into the 9450-hectare feral predator-free area at Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary, on Ngalia Warlpiri/Luritja Country (NT). Recent surveys estimate the population is now around 332 📈 This growth shows the criticality of feral predator-free areas and conservation activity at scale to bring Australia's wildlife back from the brink of extinction. 📷 W Lawler/AWC #AWC #AustralianWildlife #Mala #RufousHareWallaby #Newhaven #ConservationOptimism

🌍🐘 This World Elephant Day, we shine a spotlight on the majestic elephants that grace the Aberdare ecosystem. These magnificent creatures are not only symbols of our natural heritage but also play a crucial role in sustaining the delicate balance of our environment. The Aberdare ecosystem is home to an estimated 3,600 elephants, a population that has seen steady growth thanks to the concerted efforts of conservationists and local communities. This thriving population is a testament to the importance of preserving natural habitats and the continued dedication to protecting these gentle giants. However, the work is far from over. As human activities and infrastructure developments increasingly encroach on wildlife habitats, it’s more critical than ever to advocate for sustainable practices that ensure elephants and other wildlife can coexist harmoniously with human communities. At Aberdare Yetu, we are committed to safeguarding the Aberdares and ensuring that the elephants continue to roam freely across this beautiful landscape. By supporting the alternative Ndaragwa - Kariamu - Ndunyu Njeru road route, we aim to protect the critical wildlife corridors that are essential for the survival of these elephants. Let’s join forces this World Elephant Day to protect our elephants and the habitats they depend on. Together, we can secure a future where these magnificent beings continue to thrive in the wild. 🌿🐘 #WorldElephantDay #AberdareYetu #SaveTheAberdares #ElephantConservation #ProtectOurWildlife #SustainableDevelopment

"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤, 𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥." 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐭. Recognizing the importance of wildlife conservation and restoration efforts for all imperiled species. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law and became a landmark piece of legislation that institutionalized our national commitment to the conservation of plants and animals and habitats in which they are found. ESA has been highly effective and credited with saving 99% of listed species from extinction. Today, the ESA protects over 1,300 species that are either endangered or threatened. This historic conservation law has helped revive the populations of nearly 300 species in the last 50 years. Every year on the third Friday in May, we celebrate Endangered Species Day by learning about and taking action to protect threatened and endangered species around the world and in our own backyard.
