Kawasaki has unveiled its hydrogen-powered Ninja H2, marking the first public appearance of a hydrogen internal combustion engine motorcycle. Debuting at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, this innovative two-seater features a modified 998cc inline-four supercharged engine that burns hydrogen from high-pressure tanks positioned behind the rider. Designed as part of Kawasaki's Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology (HySE) research initiative, the bike aims to offer the performance and feel of traditional motorcycles while producing only water vapor as an emission. KAWASAKI NINJA H2 998cc SUPERCHARGED HYDROGEN ENGINE. We all love feel sensations when we ride a motorcycle; however actually e-options (with few exceptions) are changing the rules. Today Kawasaki proposes a 998cc supercharged engine that burns hydrogen instead fuel. “Hydrogen engines produce power like conventional gasoline engines. Air is taken in, mixed with fuel and then combusted” Satoaki Ichi Kawasaki H2 project leader. Technical data is not available right now, so we should wait the next Satoaki Ichi’s project steps, but of course we can wait. Below Kawasaki’s project presentation.

Hydrogen as an alternative for gasoline in cars has been an abject failure. So why are Kawasaki and Yamaha pushing the technology on motorcycles? It is not widely recognized by the motorcycle industry media, Japan set a goal to transform their economy by switching from fossil-fuel to hydrogen as the primary energy source since 2017. The Basic Hydrogen Strategy is a national strategy designed to keep Japanese industry competitive by developing a complete domestic hydrogen energy sector as a direct replacement for fossil fuels. A long term plan, it provides generous government support to build the full supply chain, from hydrogen generation via green technologies such as wind turbines, to hyper efficient transportation systems for super-cooled liquid hydrogen, to hydrogen powered raw material manufacturing such as so-called green steel production. The embarrassing failures of Toyota Motor Corporation's Mirai and American Honda Motor Company, Inc. Insight hydrogen EVs due to a near total lack of hydrogen fuelling stations in North America seemed to signal the end of hydrogen as a possible alternative energy source. But in Japan there has been no retreat, with over $100b in national investments planned for the next 15 years. Japanese business culture is very long-term in its thinking. The recent Kawasaki H2 demonstration is part of a corporate vision established all the way back in 2010. Together with its four domestic rivals (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki), the Japanese motorcycle industry is attempting to pivot to a zero emission motorcycle future that builds on their 75 years of internal combustion engineering mastery. In their vision, it means clean motorcycling without compromise. Kawasaki plans to introduce hydrogen motorcycle technology by the early 2030s, utilizing Japan's strong internal combustion engine technology. The public test run took place during the Suzuka 8 Hours Road Race, with the motorcycles equipped with two tanks each holding 25 liters of hydrogen. The Hydrogen Small Engine Technology Research Association, comprising motorcycle manufacturers and other organizations, is working on developing the necessary technology for hydrogen motorcycles and establishing standards for their use on public roads. #Yamaha Motor is taking one step forward towards a greener future. Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) will start building a new verification testing facility for melting aluminum alloy and heat-treating cast parts using hydrogen gas at its Morimachi Factory, in Japan. The development and verification of the new technologies and techniques will begin in 2025. The aim is that, by the end of 2026, they are completed to gradually being implemented at all Yamaha Motor factories from 2027 onward. This Proof of Concept is part of Yamaha Motor’s efforts to minimize Scope 1 CO2 emissions across the life cycles of our products, which concern the emissions produced as a direct result of business activities (product manufacturing and fuel combustion). The project is in line with Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, whose strategy aims at being carbon neutral throughout all of its supply chains, including the company's business activities by 2050.
