HS2's Burton Green cut and cover tunnel in Kenilworth, Warwickshire is making significant progress. The 700-meter-long tunnel is a critical component of the High Speed 2 rail project, which aims to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times across the UK. The construction of the tunnel involves excavating a trench, constructing the tunnel structure within it, and then covering it back up with earth. This method minimizes disruption to the surrounding landscape and communities compared to traditional tunneling techniques. As work on the Burton Green tunnel pushes forward, it showcases the engineering prowess and innovative solutions being employed in the HS2 project. The tunnel will not only facilitate high-speed rail travel but also serve as a testament to the capabilities of modern engineering in tackling complex infrastructure challenges. The progress at Burton Green represents another milestone in the HS2 project, bringing the UK one step closer to a more efficient and sustainable transportation future.

Extra tunnels included in £6bn East West Railway Company scheme The Government has unveiled details of the proposed East West Rail project following its commitment to fund the project in the last Budget. Plans include a new section of railway between Bedford and Cambridge, including building new stations at Tempsford and Cambourne, and upgrades to the existing railway between Oxford and Bedford. Bowing to pressure to reduce the project’s environmental impact two tunnels are now proposed for the new stretch of railway in Cambridgeshire. Design engineers have also worked to reduce costs and have removed or reduced the height of embankments and viaducts for over half the route between Bedford and Cambridge. The cost of the project has now risen from a previous upper estimate of £5.3bn to £6bn. Of the total around £3bn will be direct construction cost. HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd's main works contractor has completed the first of over 50 viaducts along the high-speed rail project, following a two-year construction program. Eiffage Kier Ferrovial BAM (EKFB), achieved structural completion by installing the last stretch of parapets along the Highfurlong Brook Viaduct in #Northamptonshire. The design, led by EKFB's design partner ASC in collaboration with architect Moxon, marks significant milestones in the HS2 program. Scott Corsar MCIHT, EKFB project manager, emphasised the teamwork and dedication behind the success of the Highfurlong Viaduct project. The next phase will focus on delivering earthworks to support the railway and installing rail systems like track, signaling, power, and communications. The 163-meter-long viaduct, comprising seven spans, crosses Highfurlong Brook's floodplain at a height of approximately nine meters, showcasing efficient beam installation and deck pouring processes. Highfurlong Brook Viaduct is part of the extensive HS2 project, featuring various bridging structures from small road bridges to impressive viaducts like the record-breaking Colne Valley Viaduct. This progress aligns with the ongoing efforts in the project, including Balfour Beatty VINCI JV reaching the halfway point of the Bromford Tunnel. AECOM has been selected by Dragados UK to serve as the lead designer on the first stage of the design and construction of new passenger tunnels at the Elephant & Castle Tube station in London. AECOM will lead on engineering, covering all tunnelling works associated with the new station box, as well as environment and stakeholder engagement services. WW+P and Dr Sauer will provide architectural services and tunnelling expertise, respectively, and have been appointed to the project under AECOM. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Major construction on the next stage of Canberra’s light rail project is set to commence in February 2025. Meanwhile, preparatory works are currently being carried out including completion of earthworks, excavation and concrete works. The $575.3M Light Rail Stage 2A is jointly funded by the Australian and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Governments. Stage 2A will extend the existing light rail network by 1.7 kilometres from Alinga Street in the City to Commonwealth Park. This section of the Light Rail to Woden development will also deliver three new stops at Edinburgh Avenue, City South and Commonwealth Park. Delivering the project is the Canberra Metro consortium consisting of Pacific Partnerships, CPB Contractors, John Holland, UGL, Mitsubishi Corporation, Aberdeen Infrastructure Investments, DB Engineering & Consulting, CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) & MUFG. AECOM were the successful tenderers for the Design & Planning Approvals. This method ensured quality control, reduced on-site disruptions, and improved efficiency compared to traditional methods. However, it wasn’t without challenges. “Each segment was engineered to fit the weight and size limitations of locally available heavy-duty cranes,” explains Teh. At times, tandem crane operations were required, resembling a "tango dance" as multiple cranes worked in sync to lift and position the segments. 🔹 DataMesh Director, Digital Twin Simulations: Enhancing Safety and Planning Leveraging the power of digital twin technology, the team conducted simulated launching operations to optimise planning and identify potential challenges. These simulations provided critical visual insights, proving invaluable during presentations, training sessions, and tabletop exercises, ensuring that every team member had a clear understanding of the operation's intricacies. 🔹 Prioritising Safety at Every Step Safety was at the core of the project. Comprehensive risk assessments identified hazards, while robust mitigation strategies were implemented. This proactive approach included: Extensive safety training to ensure compliance with protocols. Emergency response plans for scenarios like machinery breakdowns or accidents. Post-project reviews to refine processes and foster continuous improvement. With a focus on worker safety, public welfare, and environmental preservation, JTC demonstrated a future-forward approach to construction. The result? A seamless blend of technology, precision, and safety that sets a new benchmark for infrastructure projects. Mixed reality technologies like these are not just enhancing our ability to build but are reshaping the very concept of how we do so—bringing us closer to a safer and more efficient future. 🌍✨
