Wrapping Up My First Week at Springer Nature! This week has flown by, and I can't believe it's almost over! Coming into Springer Nature, I knew there was a strong focus on positive workplace culture from the interactions I had through the recruitment process, but experiencing it first hand has been incredible. The team here is incredibly supportive and welcoming. From day one, everyone has been happy to answer questions, offer guidance, and even share a few laughs along the way. It's clear that there's a genuine sense of collaboration and a commitment to helping each other succeed. This collaborative spirit is so important. In any team, when people work together to achieve a common goal, it leads to a multitude of benefits. Shared ideas and diverse perspectives can spark innovation and problem-solving that wouldn't necessarily be possible by working in silos. A team that's committed to mutual success fosters a sense of accountability and camaraderie, which ultimately drives better results for both the team and the company. So, how can we all create a culture of collaboration? Celebrate the differences in your team and bring more in when you can. One of the terms you often hear bandied around when it’s time to recruit, is cultural fit. This can be dangerous, as done poorly it just results in us recruiting people the same as us and our teams. A team’s strength comes from a diversity of thinking, experiences and backgrounds. Cultural fit can give you consistency, easy integration and like for like replacement. But what if you struggle to find innovation and creativity on your team, a new dynamic could be just what you need to get more form your current people. Ten similar people with the same background will tend to give you the same solution to a problem. Wouldn’t you rather get a number of divergent ideas and solutions and pick from the best?. That is why we need to focus on cultural add. I am not saying that fitting into team dynamics is not important but if your results are a homogenising of your team, think again about the creativity and opportunities you could be missing out on. Aiming for free flowing ideas, creativity, productive discomfort in a respectful way is how it should work.
