The World Wide Web has changed all our lives and SEO has evolved since the WWW launched over 30 years ago.
The first webpage launched in 1991 and today there are over 1 billion websites with close to 4 million websites created every single day.
But how can you get noticed when there is so much competition out there?
Well one method is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). In the past that included the classic dark tactic of putting black keywords on black so that it became invisible, but luckily things have moved on from that. Everything is much more sophisticated, it’s now much more about the user experience and nuance.
The concept of hypertext made the World Wide Web possible by creating clickable links which connect users to other digital content. This became the basic building block of the World Wide Web, allowing easy navigation and further access to digital information.
So let’s talk about the link between hypertext and SEO.
Hypertext is text that is displayed on your website and is linked to other documents or resources. ‘Click here’ as a hyperlink isn’t clear to bots, whereas ‘learn more about our STEM courses for women’ tells bots that you offer STEM courses for women and you know what else that inevitably improves? Your accessibility.
What else helps SEO?
Clear descriptive headings in an hierarchical order, but this also makes you accessible too!
Alt Text is a basic requirement for SEO and, yes you guessed it, it’s also what you need to be accessible. Alt text would be included by default if you developed it with accessibility in mind.
Using clear language is one of WCAG’s criteria to ensure the reader gets a clear understanding of your content. This helps your SEO as it’s one of Google’s main ranking factors. You no longer need to keyword stuff your copy, thank god. And hasn’t it made for much more human marketing?!
There are so many more reasons, but if the £274 billion purple pound and click away pound wasn’t enough of a reason to be accessible, you are improving your SEO at the same time. It really is a win-win and a good business decision all round.

11moA very sad set of stats against a poor graphic. Sadly most victims of sexual crimes never get justice let alone believed. I can only assume that fact is even worse with anyone with a form of disability :(
