Can food waste be the solution to solving coastal erosion and pollution? The ecologists from Witteveen+Bos, Yukie Yokoyama and Erika Ng, might just have the answer to that. Using discarded oyster shells from restaurants, they’ve created Singapore’s first artificial oyster reef. Besides coastal protection, these artificial reefs will help to improve water quality over time and provide suitable habitat for marine biodiversity. Join us to hear from Yukie, on their novel idea of turning trash into treasure. Their specialties include nature-based solutions, sustainable development related to climate mitigation, adaptation to coastal ecosystems and providing long-lasting benefits for people and nature. With 80% of Earth's biodiversity residing in the ocean, confirming that it is undeniably a vital ecosystem. This vast marine ecosystem supports a diverse array of species, from microscopic organisms to massive whales, playing a vital role in sustaining life and ecological balance 🌊 On March 7th, 2024, alongside #PearlProtectors, North Sails Sri Lanka took action to safeguard it. Our focus was the Palagala South Reef, Sri Lanka, a location suffocating under marine debris. Within the span of one day, we removed different types of waste such as plastic bottles, food packaging, ghost nets, and polythene bags which covered a large surface area of the reef, spanning over a 600-meter seabed stretch. Our efforts extend beyond a mere cleanup; they're about restoring crucial habitats for the safeguard of marine life. Through clearing the debris, we mitigate risks such as entanglement and ingestion for countless species. However, we recognize that the reduction in production and waste generation are the ultimate solutions. This initiative serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action against marine pollution. This Spring equinox marks the International Day of Forests 🌳 Covering 30% of the Earth's surface, forests are vital not only as carbon sinks, but also as the foundation of life for a quarter of the global population. For 2024, the theme is Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World. And while technological advancements offer hope, it is the ancestral knowledge of Indigenous Peoples that truly pave the way for sustainable forest management. Their stewardship is a beacon for the sustainable management of our planet's lungs, a testament to effective conservation. Indigenous territories in Brazil, safeguarding the biodiversity of these forests, lost only 1% of their vegetation area in 30 years, demonstrating a resilience and conservation success rate 20 times greater than that of private lands. Indigenous stewardship offers a blueprint for preserving our most vital ecosystem and combating deforestation and climate change, rooted in wisdom that has been passed through the ages.
