Revisiting Unbuilt designs – A Visionary Seaside Development Back in 2009, while working with #MSCEB, I had the privilege of doing a concept design for a visionary project: Souk Al Arabia, a low-rise, mixed-use seaside development in Budaiya, Bahrain. This concept was developed entirely in Revit for an internal competition, showcasing the potential of architectural technology to bring ambitious ideas to life. The project aimed to create a one-of-a-kind waterfront destination inspired by the charm of Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai. At its core, Souk Al Arabia represented a fusion of modern innovation and traditional Bahraini architectural elements, such as wind towers, mashrabiyas, pergolas, and intricate screens. The result was a timeless design that honored Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage while meeting contemporary urban demands. Key Features of Souk Al Arabia: 1. A Mixed-Use Vision: o Residential apartments, ranging from 1-bedroom to 3-bedroom units. o Serviced apartments catering to short and long-term stays. o A boutique hotel and vibrant retail spaces. o A variety of Food & Beverage outlets designed to complement the stunning waterfront setting. 2. An Expansive Waterfront Boardwalk: o Accessible to the public, the boardwalk serves as the heart of the community, encouraging social interaction and engagement with the scenic surroundings. 3. Massive Scale: Spanning approximately 140,000 sq.m. of gross built-up area, Souk Al Arabia was designed to be a landmark project for Bahrain, blending lifestyle, leisure, and living seamlessly. As architects, we take immense pride in creating spaces that go beyond structures—spaces that inspire communities and elevate experiences. Mashrabiyas and Screens: A blend of privacy and aesthetics, offering shade and reducing heat gain. Pergolas and Parapets: Creating shaded, usable outdoor spaces while maintaining visual appeal. This was more than a design; it was a cultural reinterpretation, ensuring the development resonated with local heritage while standing out as a modern landmark. What Made Souk Al Arabia Unique? 1. Diverse Functions in Harmony: o Residential: Over 32,000 sq.m. of salable apartments, offering 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units. o Serviced Apartments: Almost 10,000 sq.m. tailored for flexibility. o Retail and Dining: 15,000 sq.m. of lively commercial spaces. o Boutique Hotel: 5,000 sq.m. of luxury accommodation. 2.
