What a busy week at The Office of 24hr Economy's Neon 24 conference! ✅ First of all, what massive organisation and curatorial feat by #team24. There was a broad diversity of topics and perspectives covered which made it more than a political lovefest. Some very stimulating inputs by demographers, researchers, industry bodies, institutions and others. ✅ Secondly, an event like this shows the type and scale of momentum a well-formulated and thought-through agenda - like the night-time economy - can gain and be supported by government. There are many lessons to be learned and adapted from this achievement especially in the cultural and creative sector where industry voice is still fragmented. ✅ Thirdly, this was a conference where I learned and discovered quite a bit about the overlaps and confluences of the creative agenda and the night-time agenda and I do think that future iterations of this event could shine a light on these areas: 🌃 defining districts/areas/character zones that matter because they represent a collective, not an individual and strengthening their collective visibility and success. This is what the Office of the 24-hour Economy has done but also what the Japanese night-time association has established. 🤝 breaking down barriers to collaboration by making it easier to match make between suppliers and could be clients via a digital marketplace (like #NeonMarketplace) which is something we'd love to achieve between creative organisations and landlords. 📈 Creating proper data benchmarks and frameworks for longitudinal data collection which helps everyone understand what is happening on the ground and measure impact of initiatives as #dataafterdark does 🔐 Creating industry and grassroots-led mechanisms to protect property that is critical to the night-time economy by removing them from the market, owning them collectively and offering support through these difficult times. This is the structural thinking needed to preserve and protect the magic of our cities and places. There's a lot more to unpack, hopefully next year there can be even more creative representation alongside other critical actors of the night-time economy. 🇦🇺 The thing about Australian flex space businesses... We all need to take a closer look. To be honest. Cat Johnson, Jamie Russo, Giovanni Palavicini and I recently joined a virtual panel at Flexible Workspace Australia's annual conference. It was led by Brad Krauskopf about whether Australian flex space businesses were leading or lagging behind the global market. We laughed. We cried. We sped through wins, challenges, social impact, real estate deal structures, pro tips, tech stacks, and discussed both emerging and undercurrent trends. We even threw about an "AI grenade" around booking platforms a little bit. But, the main thing I noted is that even in the areas where Aussie brands are leading (and there's a fair few of them), those stories, wins, innovations and market moves aren't being told, or at least shared widely enough. Both inside and outside the island/country/continent. Aussie business leaders, let's fix that? If you're in Australia ping me your news, and I'll do my best to highlight more of it. --- For future reference I first summarized a link about Australia for my newsletter 869 days ago (published in week 11 of 2022). Since then I've shared 52 more. Not bad but only 1.22% of the 4,343 summaries I've made and sent out. Edit: Correction, it is 1.85% of the total links logged in TWIC Explore. Still not enough!
