Karwood Estates Inc. and Gregg Construction Ltd., related real estate and construction companies with significant raw land holdings in St. John’s and Paradise, Newfoundland & Labrador, obtained CCAA protection on June 5. Over the past five years, these companies have faced financial and operational difficulties due to unfavorable third-party actions (primarily regulatory actions by the Town of Paradise and Town of Spaniard’s Bay), the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising interest rates, and alleged aggressive lender behavior. These challenges have severely impacted their working capital. They are in arrears with several lenders, including their senior secured creditor, the Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union, which is owed approximately $3.6 million.
