European Union legislation to restore habitats to their natural state entered into force on 11 August 2024. Under the legislation, Member States must implement measures to restore at least 20% of the EU's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by 2050. The regulation sets binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, particularly those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. The barriers to nature restoration and a resilient landscape are many. This recent news from the UK Government aligns with one of the many outputs of our Patchy Peat Solutions Project. Infrastructure and regulation are a critical barrier to the efficient and sustainable management of water within river catchments and the restoration of lowland peat. We are delighted that there will new funding available to support Nature Restoration. CIEEM response to our PM's announcement this morning. Words really matter Keir Starmer - newts and bats (and other protected sites and species) have their own intrinsic value and need protecting and restoring, but they are also proxies for the wider natural environment, and we need both, and homes for hard-working people. It's not one or the other. As the Government-commissioned Dasgupta Review on the Economics of Biodiversity made clear, a robust and healthy economy is underpinned by a resilient and functioning natural environment. It's not one or the other. We will continue to work with Government and its agencies on the solutions so that we can both build needed homes and infrastructure and also, not just protect, but restore nature. It's not one or the other! https://lnkd.in/dCbeGfgb

It's not one or the other Keir Starmer . People need nature for food security, carbon storage, resilience against climate change and health. What good are more houses without any of that? There's a wealth of evidence to show that you can look after nature and people. Put simply, people are part of nature. Housing can be built whilst also restoring the nature we rely on. The Dasgupta Report sets out the reliance of our economy on nature. The Green Finance Institute predicts a 12% drop in the UK's GDP linked to the decline of biodiversity. It's not one or the other!

Europe's Nature Restoration Law: A Game-Changer for Indonesian Nature Commodities. As the EU’s Nature Restoration Law aims to restore 20% of degraded ecosystems by 2030, the global market for natural commodities is poised for significant change. This law is not just about Europe; its ripple effects will extend to key trading partners like Indonesia. The EU is Indonesia’s fourth-largest trading partner, with trade in goods totaling €21.5 billion in 2023. A significant portion of this trade involves nature-based commodities such as palm oil, rubber, and timber. However, with Europe’s commitment to biodiversity restoration, the demand for sustainably sourced and verifiable products is expected to surge. For Indonesian exporters, this law could mean stricter entry requirements into the European market, including proof of sustainable practices and ecosystem impact assessments. Failure to meet these standards could result in reduced market access or even trade restrictions. For instance, Indonesia's palm oil industry, which generated $18 billion in exports in 2022, could face heightened scrutiny, influencing both pricing and marketability. On the flip side, this shift presents an opportunity for Indonesia to enhance its global reputation by leading in sustainable commodity production. Adopting and showcasing environmentally responsible practices can open up new markets and secure long-term trade relationships. In conclusion, Indonesia's nature commodities sector must adapt to the evolving demands driven by Europe's environmental legislation. Embracing sustainability isn’t just ethical—it’s essential for maintaining and expanding our global market share. The time to act is now—sustainability isn’t just a choice; it's a competitive advantage.

📣 FINALLY the European Commission's Nature Restoration Law has gained all of the votes needed to be put into action! 🏞 This is the first law of its kind and it aims to facilitate restoration of at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. 🗺 There will be particular focus on those ecosystems with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters. 🐠 The regulation covers terrestrial, coastal and freshwater, forest, agricultural and urban ecosystems including wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers and lakes, as well as marine ecosystems, including seagrass and sponge and coral beds. 🤔 It's incredible that such a battle was had in passing this legislation that could have meant that it didn't happen, even to restore just 20% of degraded ecosystems! 🦋 However it signals a positive shift in our consciousness, that nature not only needs our protection but must be restored to good health. This is critical in preventing climatic and ecological breakdown. This law is a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and will help to take action to address nature that is in severe decline, with currently over 80% of EU habitats being in poor condition. 🌱 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dKkwEEFk #sustainability #nature #regeneration #biodiversity #business Greenheart

The outcomes of #STRP27 will play a critical role in shaping preparations for the #WetlandsCOP15, where Contracting Parties will decide on the future implementation of scientific and technical priorities of the Convention. The Panel’s recommendations include adopting updated criteria for wetland designation, establishing the Waterbird Estimates Partnership, and further integrating wetland conservation into global biodiversity and climate goals. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eTmiARSJ #COP15Zimbabwe #WetlandsMatter

I am happy to share our latest(Open access) publication introducing an innovative and wholistic paradigm to meet #GlobalConservationTargets titled "Resilient riverine social-ecological systems: A new paradigm to meet global conservation targets" The authors are Denielle Perry, PhD, Sarah Praskievicz, Ryan McManamay, Kerry Grimm, Nicolas Zegre, Lucas Bair, Ben Ruddell, and Richard Rushforth We propose a resilience-based riverine conservation framework that includes: (1) assessing riverine resilience using indicator frameworks; (2) considering rivers as dynamically coupled social-ecological systems; (3) explicitly incorporating terrestrial–aquatic network connectivity into conservation decision-making; and (4) strategic systems planning using a novel resilience–conservation matrix as a tool. This framework has the potential to transform conservation practices around the globe to more effectively protect river systems and enhance their resilience to climate change and human development. https://lnkd.in/euNREFZu

On 17 June 2024 the EU Council adopted Nature Restoration Law. In a nutshell, the law aims to restore ecosystems across the EU's land and sea areas, targeting at least 20% by 2030 and all in need by 2050, to support biodiversity recovery, climate mitigation, and adaptation. It establishes binding restoration targets for specific habitats and species, with measures to reverse pollinator decline, increase organic carbon in soils, and expand green urban spaces.
