Being the Program Director of Renewal House in Danbury is an impactful experience. Hope for the hopeless. Vision for those without vision. I always tell the residents of Renewal House, “There is safety in a multitude of good counsel.” Often, this good counsel comes from community-based services. In short, I am fulfilling my calling by helping those who have been beaten down by life’s circumstances. That they are not alone, that there is hope and vision for their future. It’s an honor to do this work, hard as it often is. We serve a diverse group of people: engineers, mothers, fathers, grandparents, individuals with early onset dementia, former business owners, and former homeowners. We encounter tragedies, losses, natural disasters, recovering addicts, and domestic violence victims. These are the people we serve. There is no fanfare in being the Program Director. No accolades or compensation can match the effort required to make a difference between merely surviving and truly thriving. The work involves advocating for housing, benefits, therapy, medical services, fostering community, and bringing laughter. Any experienced person can do that. But it’s a gift and an honor to impart hope, healing, vision, peace, and peace of mind; that’s what I get to do! Helping people so they can restore their lives and independence and believe in themselves again. A year ago, much of our downtown was covered by encampments. People on the streets were sick and tired of being moved along with no place to go, and neighborhoods were eager for solutions. Today, we are one of the only growing cities in the nation without large encampments in our downtown and we have emerged as a national leader in the fight to end unsheltered homelessness by treating people living in encampments with the respect and dignity that we all deserve. This morning we released a one-year report highlighting the progress we’ve made together over the last year. Here are some of the highlights from the report: -1673 people moved indoors from unsheltered homelessness in 12 months -583 people moved into permanent housing from unsheltered homelessness -More than 300 blocks of our city permanently closed to encampments -0 large encampments remaining in downtown Denver There is still plenty of work to do, but I’m grateful to be able to step back and celebrate the amazing progress we have made together in 12 months time. Every day, powerful people make policy decisions that deeply impact our lives. Utility companies hike up our rates despite their own massive profits, cities invest in building stadiums for tourists instead of desperately needed affordable housing, our loved ones are in crisis as mental health providers shutter their doors. These problems are big, and we often feel powerless to solve them. Alone, it is easy for those in power to ignore our cries for justice. Alone, none of us stand a chance of getting to that decision-making table and forcing action to address our community’s needs. But together, we are powerful. DART affiliates have organized and won over $450 million for affordable housing; ensured that 60,000 fewer children were arrested in the state of Florida; created a break in the school-to-prison pipeline for more than 650 schools; and so, so much more. In Iowa, over 21,000 evictions were filed last year alone. That's enough eviction to evict the entire city of Coralville and that doesn't take into consideration that many of those evictions include more than one person, many of whom are children. In 2023, 51% of eviction filings were dismissed. In Iowa, we have no way of getting ~10,500 evictions off of peoples' records, making deposits more expensive and ultimately, more difficult for people to rent. In a time when rent is skyrocketing, we need to do everything possible to help innocent individuals access safe and affordable housing.
