It's a day for sharing. from the #125DaysToSayYes - A National Strategy on Brain Injury: The Honourable Mark Holland: Day #13 of 125 Days to Say Yes! - Meet Shirley Wilson Remembering Jacob Wilson with love on Valentine’s Day I respectfully bring to your attention Shirley Wilson, a resident of Abbotsford, BC. Shirley’s MP is the Hon. Ed Fast (Abbotsford) and her plea, highlighted in a poignant video, shares the heartbreaking truth of losing a son to brain injury and toxic drug poisoning because of barriers in the system blocking his access to service. Jacob was considered “too complex”. Shirley joins a chorus of voices—individuals, families, caregivers, service providers, and stakeholders—all sounding the alarm and calling for an immediate National Strategy on Brain Injury. Listen to Shirley's petition in this impactful video: https://lnkd.in/ghkG75GG Honour the life of Jacob Wilson. Bill C-277, championed by Alistair MacGregor, MP (Cowichan-Malahat-Langford) addresses a pressing and often overlooked issue in Canada—the lifelong consequences of brain injury. In Canada, acquired brain injuries, both traumatic and non-traumatic, occur at a rate 44 times higher than spinal cord injuries, 30 times more common than breast cancer, and a staggering 400 times more prevalent than HIV/AIDS. Shockingly, the incidence and prevalence of brain injury surpass the combined numbers of HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injury, breast cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Annually, over 165,000 Canadians endure traumatic brain injuries, contributing to a national prevalence exceeding 1.5 million cases (Brain Injury Canada, n.d.). Yet, this figure falls short, as it excludes unreported cases resulting from concussions, intimate partner violence, homelessness, incarceration, combat, and substance-related incidents. While acknowledging your government's significant healthcare investments, I emphasize that addressing brain injury goes beyond healthcare. Despite provinces and territories meeting healthcare criteria, the current state of brain injury services and support across the country is marked by fragmentation, isolation, and chronic underfunding. I implore Canada's leaders to recognize the critical imperative for a comprehensive national strategy encompassing brain injury awareness, prevention, treatment, and holistic recovery. This is not just a health concern; it is a pressing national crisis that demands immediate attention and action. Please act today! I have just attended my first ISSUP - International Society of Substance Use Professionals Live Webinar. The "𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐀𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" Conference. Although I am a human being in #Recovery, I have learned (or been conditioned) over the years to avoid most things that are 'Recovery'! However, this event was truly inspiring. One thing that floated my boat was the Community Development Approach to solving one of the world's most harrowing issues. It was fascinating to hear from: David Best Dot Smith Mulka Nisic Regina Mattsson Amy Ronshausen Thank you for organising this event. I have so many questions and would love to speak to you all about 'Recovery Cities', 'Recovery Universities', ' Research', and' Policy'! I would love to pick your wonderful brains on the topic of 'Research', especially as I am about to start my dissertation in September. #ISSUP #Recovery #Webinar #LifeLongLearning #CommunityDevelopment #Addiction
The Inclusive Recovery Cities model has been live since 2018 and currently involves around 30 cities in eight European countries. The aim of the movement is to celebrate the achievement of addiction recovery through public events that challenge stigma, increase access for recovering populations to community resources and contribute to civic society and active citizenship. Join David Best, Mulka Nisic, Dot Smith, Regina Mattsson and Amy Ronshausen, as they share insights from five years of innovation, research, and evaluation across a number of European cities. 🏘🏢 Don't miss out! We love celebrating community partners like the team at the Cridge Centre for the Family in Victoria, British Columbia. Tori Dach coordinates their Intimate Partner Violence and Brain Injury Program, and kindly agreed to share a little about herself. 🧠 Where are you from? Victoria, BC 🧠 What is your area of study/expertise? Brain Injury Program Development and Service Delivery 🧠 What do you do in your research/work? I explore and execute ways in which women living with a brain injury as a result of intimate partner violence can receive brain-injury informed support services focused on improving daily living activities. 🧠 Why does it matter? Because when brain injury is factored into healing and recovery plans, support includes navigating how they brain processes information differently post-injury. 🧠 What is one thing you think everyone needs to know about BI in IPV? That it is so incredibly prevalent. And once we know that we can't un-know it, opening our minds to creative and innovative ways to do things differently leading to more safe and successful outcomes for survivors. Thanks to Tori and her colleagues for doing such great work to support surviors of IPV-BI!

The Surgeon General’s advisory one year ago was a catalyst for change that opened the country’s eyes to the fact that 58% of Americans experience loneliness. In the latest episode of @Papa’s #UnpackedwithPapa, our Vice Board Chair, Edward Garcia, had the pleasure of sitting down with Kelsey McNamara to unpack the many new programs and bodies of legislation that have taken form since, discussing where they’ve hit the mark and where there’s room for improvement. Our discussions with policymakers on the Hill and in the White House earlier this week for #GlobalLonelinessAwarenessWeek underscored the urgency of and interest in addressing social isolation and loneliness at both national and community levels. The need for action has never been clearer, and we're hopeful for the future. By convening more conversations like those we’ve had this week, we can all help advance meaningful change.
