This is a fantastic article by Vicky Teinaki on the importance and history of information architecture (IA), with an excellent list of resources. Information architecture does not seem to get the attention it deserves as the field of UX becomes increasingly oriented toward shipping quickly but not well (think of recent AI debacles from Google and Figma), and trying to do all discovery, ideation, and design with a single, trendy toolset (you again, Figma). IA has always had the benefit of diverse perspectives and a host of available tools and techniques (including the humble spreadsheet! Homer Simpson voice: "What can't they do?") We need IA as a discipline, and IA professionals, to structure the information that creates digital experiences and intertwingled (hi, Peter Morville) information spaces--including (especially?) those involving AI. As a digital publishing professional cum web manager cum IA/research/ UX consultant, in the early 2000s I found that Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville's book offered a name and formal guidance for the discipline of information architecture I'd unwittingly, but happily, entered into. Jesse James Garrett's book provided a conceptual model of the big picture of digital experience, and a language to use with colleagues and clients. The underlying data Structure (information architecture) is essential to this still-relevant model. As is the Skeleton, screen-level IA. I hope everyone who has designer, product, UX, developer, or digital anything in their job description will (re)acquaint and (re)dedicate themselves to IA, as Vicky urges.

This. A lot. I’d definitely want to add the seminal work done by the team at BBC Radio Labs (and the rest of the BBC IA team at the time), back in 2006-2010, especially https://lnkd.in/enqK5Nb6 which was one of the major influences on OOUX. As Michael Smethurst quite rightly points out elsewhere (https://lnkd.in/eJnBtq6v), “whilst magazines may be made of pages, the web is made of links.” Designing webs first - the architecture of your objects and connections - *then* the information on each ‘page’, and only after all that, the visual ways of navigation, which is always the most ephemeral part of it all. (A shout out, too, to Mike Atherton & Carrie Hane’s spin on the above, with their ‘Designing Connected Content’ book, which is a great bridge between it all.)

AI is where technology is going, exciting times ahead. However, foundational elements such as GIGO and a solid Information Architecture remain as core elements.
