Today, one thing that brings people from all corners of the world together is sports. Sports have been part of human culture for thousands of years. But have you ever wondered how sports began and what the first sport people played was? Ancient people played games for fun, to stay fit, and sometimes as part of religious events. The first sport played with official rules was wrestling. Wrestling was one of the first sports in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, way back in 708 BCE (that's about 2,700 years ago!). They had simple rules: two people would try to pin each other to the ground without using weapons. As time went on, more sports were created. Some, like football and cricket, started hundreds of years ago. Others, like basketball, are pretty new (only about 130 years old!). Today, sports are not just about competition but also about bringing people together and promoting fitness. #Sports #Fitness

You can also keep yourselves updated with what is going on the world of sports with ABC Pacific. You’re not the coach some of you never played any sports in your life and are definitely not trained athletes. I can guarantee that those of making these negative comments would not stand a chance against any of them if you were to compete against them. They already have had that training and are in top peak fitness condition. Otherwise they would not have qualified for the Olympics and hopefully they’ll qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2026. Yes, a fortunate few secure sponsorships, but the majority compete for the sheer love of their sport and the chance to represent their country on the world’s biggest stage. Watching the victorious athletes’ faces as they stand on the podium is a magical moment, but the heartache and disappointment of those who fall short is equally profound. For many, the dream of joining the historic Gold medal club is crushed in an instant. Every four years, we get a glimpse into the lives of these remarkable athletes, and it never ceases to amaze us. Their mental fortitude, their ability to stay focused in the most intense situations, and their unwavering determination in the face of overwhelming pressure are truly inspiring. It’s emblematic of the hyper-partisan milieu of global political discourse that a country's selection of a convicted child rapist at the #Paris2024 Olympic Games garners less attention and scrutiny than a biological female competing in women’s boxing. The issue facing women's boxing at the Olympics is effectively whether and to what extent a genetic advantage (an axiomatic phenomenon in any sport) should render a sportsperson ineligible to compete in their chosen discipline. And that is a question that sporting bodies around the world, including the International Boxing Association IBA, have squarely failed to address in a cohesive manner, thanks to a wanton conflation of the issue, by administrators, media and the public alike, with gender identity politics. Those who have suffered the most from the way the controversy has been handled and reported are of course Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who have been effectively rendered powerless and voiceless in the entire debate, all while competing for the most prestigious of sporting honours in one of the toughest #Olympics events.

WILL PARIS 2024 BE REMEMBERED FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS? ❌ Disregard for competitor health with sporting venues that are 'unsafe for use' ❌ Transgender participation unlevelling the playing field for inclusivity ❌ Xenophobic uproar at victorious Asians upstaging Western athletes The Olympic Games represent the highest level of sporting achievement for many athletes who sacrifice years of discipline and training for glory. However, the Paris 2024 Olympics may go down as forgettable for all the scandals and troubles that has plagued the French organisers even before the Games got underway. The latest scandal involves accusations of rampant cheating by apparently many competitors in the men's 20km race walking event. There are strict rules which athletes must adhere as World Athletics explains: "During the 20km race walk, athletes must have one foot in contact with the floor at all times. Failure to do this is known as ‘lifting’. "Added to this, the athlete’s advancing leg must straighten from the point it touches the ground until it passes under the body – this differentiates the discipline from running." It will truly be a sad day for sport if competitors cheat their way to gain a competitive advantage albeit illegally - whether through performance enhancing drugs or not complying with the technical rules of their discipline. Then victory certainly has no honor and the Games may lose their credibility to represent the epitome of sporting excellence. https://lnkd.in/gz-gjB4X

I love the Olympics. Long before ESPN and the proliferation of sports television, the Olympics broadcast on ABC TV every four years were the height of athletes' celebrity status. The most famous athletes made the cover of General Mills Wheaties cereal or were featured in McDonald's commercials. Today, sports television is dominated by the big four: #football, #basketball, #soccer, and #baseball. True Olympic sports get some notice, but the big show is every four years. I know firsthand what it takes to support Olympic athletes; many stop training or lose interest for financial reasons. It's an unfortunate casualty of the sport's specialty, the dedication required, and the ultimate life sacrifice to train and prepare. Let's continue to support and celebrate the incredible dedication and achievements of Olympic athletes. They are a source of inspiration for us all, demonstrating the power of passion and perseverance. Their stories uplift us and motivate us to push our own boundaries.
