North Dakota State University architecture student Sydney Seamands completed her master’s degree thesis recently on understanding how to save declining rural communities in the state of North Dakota. The thesis focused on five core areas: child care availability, community and cultural amenities, developing of thriving downtowns, access to single and multi-family homes and access to quality educational opportunities. Seamands looked at five communities across the state before zeroing in on Velva as having the most potential for implementing a simple rural revitalization strategy. Ganapathy Mahalingam, NDSU architecture professor and the thesis advisor for Seamands, said the aim was to develop a revitalization strategy not for just one community like Velva but one that can be utilized in several North Dakota communities seeking development templates. https://lnkd.in/gi5ReGez #architecture #revitalization #thesis #strategy

Antje Steinmuller, Chair and Professor of Architecture at Taubman College, is featured in a November 20 interview with Metropolis Magazine, a top architecture and design publication. The interview, titled “Antje Steinmuller Wants to Get the Housing Question Right,” focuses on her transition to Ann Arbor from California, how the housing crisis affects different parts of the country, and how Steinmuller’s research addresses innovative housing typologies. Steinmuller started at Taubman College in July 2024, previously serving as chair of undergraduate architecture at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Steinmuller is quoted saying,"It is our responsibility to promote things that are beneficial to the climate, to create housing that caters to people's needs, and to look at how AI technologies can really serve us. I’m really hoping to intensify the collaborations that we have, and should have, right in Ann Arbor and Detroit and other areas. Embracing Polycentric Transit Nodes 🌐🚆 Hey everyone! I wanted to share a quick update on our ongoing master's thesis. We’ve been exploring the concept of polycentric transit nodes and its implications for more efficient and sustainable urban mobility. In contrast to traditional mono-centric transit systems, polycentric transit nodes distribute transportation services across multiple centers within a city. This approach not only reduces congestion and travel times but also promotes greater accessibility and connectivity for all residents. For our thesis, we have decided to adopt the principles of polycentric planning because polycentricity aligns perfectly with the evolving needs of modern cities, fostering more resilient and adaptable transportation networks. In 2025 will be teaching again Urban Morphological Mapping [ https://lnkd.in/gwRDhH9H ], an elective for bachelor of design students majoring in #UrbanPlanning, #Architecture, #Landscape, #Property and #SpatialSystems. It is part of the 'Towards Practice' informal specialisation, and the #urbandesign & #urbanplanning 'Breadth Track'. It introduces the field of urban morphological analysis and a range of mapping techniques. The final assignment can contribute to a portfolio demonstrating skills that are highly sought in practice, and aligned with admission criteria to Master courses. Marking the completion of my MArch Architecture degree at the University of Plymouth with Samuel Brazier. Beyond the surface Unveiling truths in urban landscapes This project explores integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced theoretical frameworks to multiple the precision of urban analysis. This integration intends to confront the socio-cultural and economic flux in urban landscapes, particularly focusing on a speculated context for Plymouth, UK 2054. This project details the transformation of Plymouth’s economy from the restructuring of the Royal Dockyard. It emphasises diversification into technology and higher education pushing a digital/finance economy that is resilient to socio-cultural and economic glitches.  The Digital and Entrepreneurship Hub offers new economic opportunities and realities that are regenerative and inclusive, using Plymouth’s historical legacies and modernisation imperatives in various sectors. The focus on technological integration and ecological landscapes (techno-ecological landscapes) supports a more efficient and agile resource management and could help in realising environmental sustainability goals set for 2054. This project is a rescaled methodology to strategic urban design that integrates advanced technology with socio-cultural and economic truths and realities, creating a transformative, resilient, and inclusive urban landscape.

Rebuilding Urban Complexity by Francesca Froy is a must-read for anyone passionate about the future of urban spaces. This book provides an innovative approach to reconfiguring our cities, ensuring they thrive in a postindustrial world. Since spaces that are emerged from post-industrial processes which I call them as waste spaces in my dissertation pave significant commons for reactiving public spaces and this book provides great insights about this reclaimed spaces. A great addition for urban planners, designers, and policymakers. Check it out! Greatly suggested.

Happily sharing that I have completed my MSc in Architecture and the Sustainable Environment at the University of Kent, achieving distinction! This journey has been an enriching experience, allowing me to delve into a series of rigorous academic exercises layered in two stages. In Stage 1, I was able to learn fascinating insights about historic buildings and past environmental technologies, principles of environmental design, and building performance #modelling and #monitoring. This phase was winded up with a creative academic exercise, applying these insights to design a sustainable habitat using recycled container units. It was also an exciting opportunity to engage with diverse practices in architectural environment, from researching 19th-century stove heating in churches in the #UK to reporting on #buildingphysics in Medellín’s Empresa de Desarrollo Urbano | EDU '#BreathingBuilding' (thanks Salmaan Craig & EDU for the insights), and modelling indoor environmental conditions using DesignBuilder Software. In Stage 2, I completed my dissertation as part of the Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnerships with the School of Computing, the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, and Baxall Construction. My research evaluated the indoor environmental performance of the #BREEAM Excellent St. Andrew's Medical Centre in #TunbridgeWells by analysing data from the extensive sensor network secure-accessed via the Intelligent Building Monitoring System (#IBMS), all after an in-depth study of relevant topics across the literature. Special attention was given to #thermalcomfort, Indoor Air Quality (#IAQ), and their impact on occupant's health, as well as implications for future #energyuse. Thanks to my lecturers, Professor Henrik Schoenefeldt, Dr. Richard Watkins, Dr. Giridharan Renganathan, and Ivan del Renzio, for their guidance at different times across #MASE. Special thanks to Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou who meritoriously advised me on my dissertation being a source of great inspiration.
