https://lnkd.in/ggvHHTEN "By focusing their problem-solving strategies on the courts and Congress, and on issues like protection of wilderness areas, parks, and endangered species, mainstream-professional environmentalists have generally avoided local environmental issues and discounted the value of local civic networks in addressing environmental harms. Consequently, they have indirectly countenanced the continued environmental degradation of local communities." ..... "Notwithstanding the local nature of environmental harms, in terms of both their genesis and consequences, traditional environmentalism has focused on places where very few of us actually live and work, such as wilderness and national parks, while overlooking densely populated areas like cities and suburbs." The article is hard on the movement. And, I appreciate the honest criticism. Something cannot be seen as relevant if you actually refuse to present it in a way or deliver solutions in a way that is relevant to the average person. Nor will it succeed if it is not structured correctly. This is on par with my experience.

Celebrating Presidents Day with a focus on environmental stewardship! Did you know? Theodore Roosevelt was a passionate advocate for nature conservation, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding America's natural landscapes. Through the enactment of the Antiquities Act, he granted the President authority to designate federal lands and establish national monuments, laying the foundation for our cherished wildlife refuges and national parks. In response to the environmental challenges of the 1960s, President Richard Nixon addressed public concerns by championing legislative action on environmental protection. This led to the establishment of vital measures such as pollution control, water conservation, industrial waste regulation, pollutant research, and disaster response protocols, culminating in the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Building upon Roosevelt's legacy, President Woodrow Wilson spearheaded the creation of the National Park Service, dedicated to the preservation and management of lands safeguarded under the Antiquities Act. Let's remain committed to safeguarding our precious lands, ensuring future generations can revel in the natural beauty and resources we cherish today. #environment #presidentsday #greenfuture #greenbuilding #swppp #epa #erosioncontrol

Conservation Program Manager at National Caucus of Environmental Legislators & Co-Chair of the America the Beautiful for All Coalition's Priorities, Projects & Campaigns Work Group
It's here!!! ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻In 2024, we look back on 60 years of the Civil Rights Act and the Wilderness Act. These two historical bills changed the course of this nation in dramatic ways but were never intentionally combined in virtue - a perilous flaw of the conservation movement in that era. 60 years later, the ATB4All 2024 Policy Agenda defines conservation priorities that improve public health for all, secure equitable access to conservation funding for tribes and frontline communities, and increase equal access to nature for everyone. The 2024 Policy Agenda includes a progress report on action, risks, and backsliding on 2023 Policy Agenda priorities. Some highlights include: 🟢 More than $141 million in funding from the America the Beautiful Challenge Grants in 2023 with 40% of funds going to Tribal communities. 🟡 Extremist attacks on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) continue in pursuit of so-called "permitting form" and the guise of supporting renewable energy. These are diversion tactics meant to weaken the environmental bill of rights for communities. 🔴 The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge (TX) was approved for Border Wall expansion, waiving critical environmental laws like the Endangered Species Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Air Act.
