With loads of fantastic questions coming through, I decided to do a double drop of 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐀𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 🎮 this week! Many of you are wondering how I transitioned my background in recruiting into the games industry. And understandably, many of you are looking for tips on getting into PlayStation (or a large AAA studio/publisher). So here’s the tea 🍵 Big companies like PlayStation have such a robust intern program that much of the entry-level and junior roles are hired through their internships. That meant that I needed to already have the skills and experience going into the role vs. the flexibility of a smaller company or studio that is willing to train someone up. I was also willing to take a step back in title, understanding that I had never recruited for a large games company, or for games in general. As such, I accepted a 4-month contract as a University Recruiter. Honestly though, I was perfect for that job. Why? Because I had 3 years’ experience in higher ed and 3 years' experience as an agency recruiter. All that was left was to prove myself and prove myself I did. If you’re a recruiter looking to get into the games side, my suggestion would be to have a solid understanding of the space (industry, candidates, AND programs/systems/tools) before you start applying. Research what’s going on in today’s market, who are the players, what games are they making and who are they hiring? Get a basic understanding of the programs and tools being used so you can have solid conversations with candidates. It makes a huge difference when you can nerd out with your candidates about their day-to-day work. It’ll also ensure your success when qualifying candidates for roles and building trust and respect with your hiring teams. An internship application changed our entire hiring process. We get hundreds of people apply for jobs, but when Julia N. wanted to work at GIFTA she made it KNOWN. She sent us an 11-page document on WHY she wanted to be part of our company. In the competitive world of job hunting, candidates are constantly looking for unique ways to make an impression. From adding vibrant visuals to resumes to creating engaging online portfolios, creativity abounds. But one individual really raised the bar by delivering his job application along with pizza and a note to a company's office. The CEO of the New York-based startup Antimetal, Matthew Parkhurst, was so impressed by this applicant that he posted about him on X (formerly Twitter). "Another internship application - came to our office and dropped off a pizza with his resume," Matt wrote on X. He added, "Even pushed a PR to fix two links in our docs prior." The applicant's initiative was so impressive that Matt promised, "100% getting an interview." The note reads, "Hey, Antimetal team. Congrats on the recent launch! Inspired by Antimetal's brief stint as a slices as a service company, please enjoy this pizza. I've also brought a copy of my resume for the engineering intern position. I am super excited by the opportunity and am driven to do what it takes." The applicant, David, cleverly used the pizza as a "bribe" to get the hiring team to check out his work by visiting his website. "This is basically a bride for you to go to my site.
