#careeradvise #lifelessons I cannot agree more. Titles and roles are fleeting and ephemeral in today's fast changing economy. Your character and skills are permanent. Spend your energy on developing these and do not run after titles.
Last year, Thasunda Brown Duckett, President and CEO of TIAA spoke to the graduating class of the MBA program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She reflected on her speech in a personal Linkedln post, where she shared some of her key reflections. “And what I know today, as a leader, is that I rent my title, but I own my character,” Duckett wrote. “I get introduced as Thasunda Brown Duckett, President and CEO of TIAA. But that title is rented. It describes me, but it doesn’t define me. I earned it, but I don’t own it. To own something feels entirely different. When you own something, it belongs to you. You can claim it and proclaim it. It’s yours,” she added. bit.ly/3Lcsu6J

In our professional journeys, we often get caught up in titles and positions. Yet, these titles are temporary and can change at any moment. What truly matters and stands the test of time is the story people tell about you—your character, your impact, and the relationships you build. It’s the moments of integrity, the times you went the extra mile, and the ways you helped others that will be remembered long after titles fade away. Focus on creating a legacy that speaks to who you are, not just what you’ve achieved. Let’s prioritize: • Building authentic connections • Making a positive impact • Upholding our values Your true legacy is not defined by your title, but by the difference you make in the lives of others. Embrace the journey and write a story worth telling. #CareerGrowth #PersonalBrand #LegacyBuilding #ProfessionalDevelopment #Leadership

This was what happened the last couple of days out of SG! How many of you think that your financial advisor is always jet-setting around the world and having fun? It was a full-out strat week for us leaders at Virtus Associates as we laid out our business plans on: - What kind of leadership do we want to lead with - How do we go about creating better value for our team in terms of growth and learning - How do we raise the bar in the industry - How can we better value-add our clients - Our dreams for our team And many more! Apart from our many coursework done over the two days, here’s a little reel we created from scratch within half an hr as a challenge from our Director, to share a little more about our annual Leadership Training Camp! Want to join a team that focuses on the Heart Work while hustling and having fun at it at the same time? I’m looking out for individuals who want to make a lifestyle out of this career, who are driven and are bold to dream, and daring enough to fight for their dreams. High-energy, high impact, bringing along a positive attitude and ready to thrive with a growth mindset. If that’s you, or if you know someone around you like that who’s just keen to find out more and explore, let me know! ♥️🫶🏻 This career picked me a long long time ago, but I rejected it, until I was ready to choose it too. And now, no regrets, cause I’m enjoying what I do every single day. #financialconsultant #lookingforwork? #LiveYourBestLife #insurance #CreativePlay #growthmindset #personaldevelopment #financecareers #financialplanning #financialfreedom #DareToBeBold #DareToChange

YOU RENT YOUR TITLE, BUT OWN YOUR CHARACTER Today, Fortune shared a post recognizing the commencement speech delivered in 2023 to MBA graduates of The Wharton School by Thasunda Brown Duckett, CEO, TIAA. Her talk really resonated with me, particularly given my decision to resign from my previous role earlier this year. I try very hard not to get it twisted - my title does not define who I am, and this was a good reminder. Here are a few lines from the speech: “𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢…𝑀𝑦 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝐼 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑦 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒, 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝐼 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑑, 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝐼 𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑦𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓…𝐽𝑜𝑏 𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑔𝑜, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑑. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚. 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦. 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢. 𝐼𝑡’𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑔𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑚𝑎𝑑𝑒, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑.” I believe leadership and character are interwoven, and that the best leaders know who they are, demonstrate empathy, and have high integrity. I found my view reinforced in the Harvard Business Publishing Corporate Learning article 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑎𝑠𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 by Diane Belcher. The author highlights that leadership character extends beyond just ethics and includes traits like compassion, willingness to serve others, and forgiveness. She further notes character plays a significant role in decision making and performance, and it is important for leaders at all levels, not just those in senior roles. When you have the time, read Ms. Brown Duckett’s speech and Ms. Blecher’s article. Both provide good perspective for us as leaders in our ongoing growth and development journey: https://lnkd.in/gzZXU8Hy https://lnkd.in/gPMdnkkE #LeadershipCharacter #ThasundraBrownDuckett #DianeBlecher
