In the most anticipated music concert opening of the year U2 opened the Las Vegas Sphere this weekend. Here are the reviews: Reviewers were beside themselves to come up with superlatives that could adequately convey the venue’s multimedia. They called the $2.3 billion Sphere a “stunning spectacle” (USA Today), “mind blowing” (The Verge), and “utterly astonishing” (The Guardian), among other media kudos. The most comprehensive review in my opinion is this one from Variety. Here are also some other quotes from other media sources. "Yes, one of the best moments is simply Sphere. Nothing can prepare you for the magnitude of experiencing a concert in this venue" Billboard Magazine "How phenomenal is the sound in Sphere? It's more wonderful than anything we’ve ever heard in an 18,000-capacity venue." Variety The New York Times review was a little tougher: "Moments underscored that, as much as U2 was playing a concert, it was providing a soundtrack for Sphere’s technological wizardry. Billboard just released its 2024 Midyear Boxscore report, detailing the performance of the year's biggest tours, promoters, and key numbers. Here are some interesting takeaways from the report: 🎫 The top 10 tours collectively grossed an impressive $1.47 billion, highlighting the growing demand for live music and fans' willingness to spend on high-profile concert experiences. Notable grossing tours include U2 with $231.6 million and P!nk with $196 million. 🎫 The average gross earnings across all 50 tracked tours were approximately $64 million. 🎫 Live Nation significantly outperformed AEG Presents, grossing $2.8 billion from 21.3 million attendees across 2,166 shows, compared to AEG Presents' $976.8 million gross from 11.3 million attendees across 4,930 shows.
