Fisk University alumnus, W.E.B. DuBois said this: "The function of the university is not simply to teach breadwinning, or to furnish teachers for the public schools, or to be a centre of polite society; it is, above all, to be the organ of that fine adjustment between real life and the growing knowledge of life, an adjustment which forms the secret of civilization". Can we please stop talking about workforce development and focus on the fine adjustment that Dr. DuBois talks about.

Director, Continuing Education and Certificate Programs | Empowering lifelong learning through innovative continuing education
“One of the problems that we have in higher ed is we think very un-corporate-like. In the corporate world, they're always reinventing themselves,” Ms. Sheetz said. “[Direct admissions] meet students where they are today. They’re no longer the students who are going to sit and fill out a five-page paper application with pencil. We’ve got to make it a smoother process and more accessible.” Interesting article. Higher ed, in general, definitely needs to reinvent itself. So, it is great to see local colleges and universities try new things. #highereducation | #university | #education | #innovation | Point Park University | Robert Morris University

🎓 Confidence in higher ed has fallen to new lows. Shocking! College was the primary rite of passage for our culture. We believed that knowledge was power and that university was the primary path toward this knowledge. Then, somehow, our culture started speaking out of both sides of its mouth: 🔬 Follow the Science! ✊ Science is racist! Now, university is more or less a super expensive box that must be checked before one can get on with one's life. There are many reasons. I'd love to hear your opinions. Friends involved in higher ed, what is to be done? #university #education #riteofpassage #highered #culture

Part of our goal at G&W is to bridge the gap between ideals and practice, especially for students entering into the work force. At G&W, we work with colleges, universities, and private schools to bring expert professional development to students making the transition from institutional learning to the "real world." Having been educated in Humanities at Yale University and Ralston College, we know the disconnect that too often exists between our institutions of higher learning and the world of day-to-day work. What does philosophy have to do with an 8-5? What does classical literature have to do with the monotonous grind of employment? We think they have everything to do with each other! In fact, we believe that our democracy depends on fortifying these relationships. And that's exactly why we started G&W. We are eager to work with higher learning institutions to help prepare your students for the world of work! The right ideas about the relationship between their education and their work life can effect a lifetime of difference.
