One of the best things we did was to send our girls to Christian summer camp. It was at camp that they learned to spread their wings – and perhaps even first realized they had them. They absorbed faith deep into their beings. They were pulled, pushed and stretched into new experiences, both physical and spiritual. They have been built into confident, caring leaders and risk takers. They learned the words to funny songs. Even during summers when we took family trips, we still got them to camp. They wouldn’t have had it any other way. My wife and I are now blessed to see our children sending their kids to camp. We consider it a privilege to help invest in the lives of our grandchildren when asked if we could help send them to a Christian camp. It can be expensive to send your kids to camp and I must admit, the expense can be intimidating. But, let me ask you some questions. How much do you spend at your favourite coffee shop each week?  How much do you spend on personal entertainment? What ‘bells and whistles’ could you cut back on? I ask these questions for this reason. What eternal benefit do we get from the ‘cost’ of the above? Perhaps we should shift our focus from thinking of camp as a ‘cost’ to thinking of it as an ‘investment’ - a spiritual investment into the lives of our children and grandchildren.  So, let’s shift our thinking away from this is a cost to this is a gain – an investment in the spiritual health of our children  Dear parent, if you can send your kid to camp summer after summer, do it. Why make Camp Cherith a priority this summer? A parent was asked why they send their child to camp each summer and if they were going to be returning this year? Her response was;   "Camp is not an option - it's a priority. There is nothing throughout the year that can offer to our boys what camp does. I have noticed year after year, it is here that they gain more confidence, get to try things they otherwise couldn't, and are meeting great friends. Even more importantly it has been most significant for their spiritual growth."   At Cherith, it is our hope that every child gets a chance to have a Christian camping experience each summer and we want to do whatever possible to make that a reality in 2024.   Sure, some will still say: "camp is just a week away from home or a nice break from the kids for the parents." It is that, but it is so much more! Recent research and feedback from parents have found that having a Christian camp experience has been recognized to: 1.  improve children's & youth's social skills 2.  see young people be willing to try new things 3.  help make children healthier by getting outdoors 4.  develop leadership skills and healthy independence in young people 5.  lead to greater likelihood of staying connected with their faith 6.  increase confidence and self-esteem 7.  serve as a great place of fun, friends and memories for a lifetime SO!  If this is what a young person gets from a camp experience, it makes complete sense why it is a priority for a family to ensure their kids get this type of experience each year!  And this is why Cherith has existed for over 70 years - to be an affordable Christian camp in the beautiful Grey Bruce area providing a positive, safe and high quality life-changing experience for the next generation! Although overnight camps are increasingly inaccessible financially, there are programs to address this. This is fantastic because they offer so many benefits, including an antidote to too much screen time and the healthy development of life skills. "At my camps, we celebrate “reasonable risks” as experiences to be embraced, not avoided. Seen through this lens, it’s easier to understand why it’s a positive that some of the following happen to every camper: They are homesick and overcome it, teaching them that they can thrive outside of their parents’ shadows. They have a dispute with a friend, are upset, and eventually craft a resolution. They try something new and fail. And fail a few more times. And then succeed through perseverance. They try something and fail without an eventual triumph. We will not always win or succeed. Children should know that they can survive those situations, too. Raising thoughtful and compassionate children is one of the best ways we can bring #light & #hope to our world! Parents normally are the first teacher and mentors of their children. So it's our responsibility to make their ways great and pleasant. There are two things they should need to remember.. 📌 Teach them to show and keep showing up... Let them know and think positively to invest in themselves. If no one believe in them, believe in themselves. They might to consider that even if they don't see the result right away - still keep showing up until they do see the result... If not come the best result, let them know to move forward. They're not going to come if they quit ( #StillKeepShowingUp)... (You're tired) keep showing up... (You don't feel like it) keep showing up... (You can't see any results) keep showing up... Yes, sometimes we don't know where to start. Just start, do something and eventually take that first step because every step you take - adds up. Tell them To... Keep #Roaring, Keep #ShowingUp and Keep #Learning !!! 📌Encourage them that there is no thoughtful action too small... Children have limited physical resources like money or jobs, but their #ideas, #words & #actions are what will change the world. So, when you are teaching about #Thoughtfulness, make sure they know that there is nothing too small for them to give. Changing the world often just begins with a smile or a kind words. That one thing, as small as it may seem but could be life changing to the community and to the person on the receiving end. Cheers for having these two wonderful children in our life. YOU DID A GREAT JOB! I spent this afternoon volunteering at Girl Child's elementary school for their annual Field Day. Hoop tosses, tug-of-war, sack races, etc. I was in charge of the cornhole station. Many of the kids were shy or hesitant, and became frustrated if the first toss wasn't a point. So, I started cheering them on. "Great job, buddy!" "Way to go, girlfriend!" "You did great! Go try again!" If they made a hit, I whooped and hollered. Did a little victory dance. Ran over and gave them a high-five. Pointed out their success to their teacher. The kids bloomed. They smiled. They laughed. They came back for more high-fives. They came back to try again. They cheered themselves and each other on. And standing there under the hot Florida sun cheering and dancing and whooping, I realized something: Everyone likes to be told they're doing a good job. (Okay, maybe not everyone. But, like, ... almost everyone.) Sometimes, we only cheer each other on when we really knock it out of the park. When we're 11 out of 10. Everything else is "doing the job." Truth, but I think a word of encouragement--or a victory high-five--when someone learns something new or is clearly trying to be better can help keep them motivated.
