I like this quote. . . but I couldn't disagree more. Herman Melville was a literary genius. For him originality was an artform and a virtue held above all others. But for the rest of us? Originality is great, but most of us are ordinary. That doesn't prevent us from succeeding, though. Leave out the originality and imitation parts of this quote and Melville is basically saying that is better to fail than to succeed. That's ridiculous. If you have some great idea for a better mousetrap, by all means, put it into production and take the world by storm. If not, however, look for a model to imitate. In the business world, consider franchising. You're literally PAYING to have access to a proven system that you can imitate and ride to success. Still don't know where to start? I can help.
