Our next initiative under the RedTent project is dedicated to empowering young girls through a PAD DRIVE in commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024. You might wonder why we're shifting our focus to young girls this time. Well, our recent project discovered a significant gap in knowledge and education surrounding female reproductive health. During our activities, we found that many women lack important information about their bodies, beyond the process of pregnancy and childbirth. There has been a long term culture of silence and misinformation in our society and this persists until adulthood, leaving women ill-equipped to understand and address reproductive issues. That's why we're launching this PAD DRIVE; to catch them young and provide them with accurate information about their bodies, reproductive systems, and rights. We're on a mission to bridge this knowledge gap and empower girls to make informed decisions about their health and well-being from an early age. Today, UNFPA’s flagship report, the State of World Population 2024, was released in Geneva. Thirty years since the adoption of the ICPD30 Programme of Action, significant progress has been made in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). However, in recent years, this progress has slowed down or even stagnated, leaving millions of people without access to vital SRHR services and products. For example, a quarter of women still cannot make decisions about their own healthcare, and nearly 1 in 10 have no choice over whether to use contraception. Between 2016 and 2020, the global annual reduction in maternal deaths was zero, with 800 women still dying every day while giving birth. This report highlights the need to reach those who are most marginalized. We require more data, investments in accessible healthcare and education, better information, and new partnerships and stronger cooperation. The ICPD agenda is more relevant than ever, offering hope. The Reality of Healthcare Inequality- A recent report underscores a harsh truth: people of color, the uninsured, and those with low incomes or living in underserved areas face significantly greater risks during pregnancy. This is due to inconsistent access to essential pre- and post-natal care. Restrictive abortion laws only make this broken system worse, adding more barriers to those who are already at risk. These laws deepen the disparities in maternal and infant health, leaving the most vulnerable populations with even fewer options and support. MSI was proud to attend the London launch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) State of the World report today. As the report explains, we need to sustain the #ThreadsOfHope we've seen in sexual and reproductive health and rights, and urgently close the gaps in access. Key findings in the report include: • Nearly 1 in 10 women cannot make their own decisions about whether to use contraception • Out of 32 countries with trend data, 19 countries have seen improvements in bodily autonomy – while 13 have seen rollbacks • Around 800 women still die every day while giving birth: nearly every single death is preventable • Between 2016 and 2020, the global annual reduction in maternal death was effectively zero. MSI's Senior Director for Programmes & Philanthropy, Anna Mackay, spoke at today's launch about how we need to partner across the public and private sectors, and with donors, to make sexual and reproductive healthcare accessible to marginalised communities, and work to close the gap.
