Reflecting on 2 Years at Beattie Matheson Ltd: A Journey of Growth and Leadership As I mark my second anniversary at Beattie Matheson Limited, I'm filled with gratitude for the incredible journey of professional growth and personal development. At the heart of this experience has been the exceptional leadership of my manager, Craig Dewe. Craig took a chance on me when I was barely two weeks in New Zealand, seeing potential where others might have seen risk. This open-mindedness set the tone for an inclusive work environment where I've never felt discriminated against as a Black African professional. Under Craig's guidance, I've learned invaluable lessons about effective leadership: 1. The power of active listening: Craig's ability to truly hear and value every team member's input has created a culture of respect and collaboration. 2. Leading with empathy: His genuine concern for our well-being has fostered a supportive atmosphere where we all feel valued. 3. Building trust: Through consistent integrity and reliability, Craig has shown us the importance of trustworthiness in leadership. 4. It’s disheartening to see Vice President Kamala Harris continually labeled as just a “DEI hire.” This dismissive narrative not only undermines her distinguished career but also echoes the harmful biases we often encounter in HR and DEI work. At OAIB, we see firsthand how such reductive labels can diminish the value of genuine diversity efforts. DEI initiatives are about bringing diverse perspectives to the table, not reducing talented individuals to mere quotas.
