*Update on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore* On May 31, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) started the process to replace the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which tragically collapsed following the impact of the M/V Dali on March 26. The goal is to have a new bridge in place by fall 2028. The iconic Key Bridge was a vital part of the I-695 Baltimore Beltway, supporting 40,000 vehicles daily. Its sudden loss has created a need for a swift and thoughtful replacement. Important upcoming milestones: ▪ Proposals are due by June 24. ▪ Phase 1 team selection will occur later this summer. ▪ The chosen team will have exclusive rights to develop Phase 2, encompassing final design, engineering, and construction, with efforts to expedite completion. The RFP calls for a structure with a minimum 75-year service life but remains open to various design options. Public discussions have suggested a cable-stay bridge. Estimated costs for this vital replacement range from $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion. #Infrastructure #Baltimore #KeyBridge #MDTA #CommunityStrength

Nature-based solutions are not new. What is new is the relatively recent buzz about and the lack of adequate guidance to apply NbS. Don’t be fooled into thinking NbS is an easier design concept. But, no better agency than USACE exists to work out the “bugs” in NbS resilience projects. The USACE engages internally and externally with the scientific community and the public. They initiate and conduct meaningful research through ERDC and have the opportunity to apply ecological and engineering concepts to develop standards. Standards will help with site selection, evaluation of alternatives and sustainable performance. 👏👏👏
