Today is International Women's Day, and I'm celebrating all the incredible women who make our industry run! But as we celebrate how far we've come, let's not forget how much more there is to do. According to the American Association of University Women, "Women make up 75% of nonprofit employees." Unfortunately, "only 42% of nonprofit boards are led by women and only 22% of nonprofits are run by a woman Executive Director/CEO" (2018). That quote and more in this article from Candid about the state of gender equity in our industry: https://lnkd.in/euGAhM-F And while we're thinking equity, let's make sure we're thinking about equity in all its forms for everyone. If you need more reading on that, I always start with the amazing folks over at Community-Centric Fundraising: https://lnkd.in/e4AUeSs7

International Women’s Day 2024 – Friday 8th March 2024 The theme for this year is “InspireInclusion”. As the first female Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire I have been giving thought to International Women’s Day and this year’s theme - #inspireinclusion. We have some amazing role models to look to – locally, nationally and globally. More and more we can now see equality and inclusion is enabling women to showcase their skills. In the business world, schools and education, religious organisations, and health care, in the world of sport, leading charities and their teams of volunteers. In construction and the built environment and importantly encouraging more girls to choose STEM subjects at school. Women becoming more visible in these roles can only be a good thing to inspire the work-force, business leaders, volunteers of the future. There has never been a better time to be female! #inspireinclusion #iwd2024 https://lnkd.in/dGX7T8X

Mama Cash is a participatory grantmaker. But what does participatory grantmaking mean exactly? To us, it means we are shifting decision-making about our grants from our staff to the communities we aim to serve: namely women, girls, and trans and intersex people who are creating a more just and joyous world. Ultimately, participatory grantmaking is about sharing power. It turns the traditional approach of philanthropy on its head by recognising the communities as the experts on their own reality and the feminist movements more broadly. The #brokenrung, the #glassceiling.. concepts that are still very much alive in 2024. In both #nonprofit and #profit organisations. Want to help #change that? Have a look at the 6 tips shared in this #HBR article.💡 ✅ My favourite : “Sponsor women and give them challenging opportunities. - When people mentor women, they tend to largely focus on listening and offering personal advice. In contrast, men are more likely to be given challenging assignments, network opportunities, and increased visibly — activities associated with sponsorship. These activities, as well as sponsorship in general, are linked with promotability; so sponsoring women helps move them up the career ladder.” Calling all #allies #mentors #sponsors #management. Together we can make a much needed difference! 🤝 #DEI
Sixty-two percent of nonprofit CEOs or executive directors identified as women while 38% identified as men. However, larger organizations were increasingly likely to have a male CEO.

Women’s funds and foundations play a critical role in supporting women's well-being and gender justice movements. This 2022 landscape study by the Women's Funding Network, a global alliance of women’s foundations and gender justice funders, provides valuable insights into the makeup, needs and impact of women's funds. The report also provides recommendations for how other funders and sector partners can collaborate with women's funds/foundations to advance social issues: 1. Resource women’s funds as primary and essential collaborators when developing strategies to tackle economy, climate, education, and crisis response issues. Women's funds bring a gender-based perspective that includes grappling with equity and power across marginalized identities. 2. Uplift women’s funds to build a diverse leadership pipeline within philanthropy. Women’s funds are the fastest growing network of women of color leaders within philanthropy. 🌟 Celebrating International Women's Day! 🌟 Despite the nonprofit industry being a female-dominated industry, it's crucial to recognize the challenges and barriers that women still face in achieving equal representation and leadership roles. Women are drawn to the nonprofit industry for its emphasis on social impact, community building, and the opportunity to make a difference. Reflecting on my master's degree journey, one of my favorite projects focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the nonprofit sector. Interestingly, the facts below were discovered during my DEI research. Sadly, in Florida, political constraints limit our ability to address DEI effectively. Nevertheless, let's persist in championing diversity and inclusion efforts wherever we can. Together, we can strive for a more equitable future for all women in the workforce. #InternationalWomensDay #DEI #WomenInLeadership #professionalwomen #nonprofitprofessional #fundraisingprofessional
