Sending your child off to school for the first time can be an emotional rollercoaster On one hand you are excited about this new phase for your child and on the other hand, you are worried and anxious about leaving your child in strange hands. Beyond that, you also feel concern about your child's anxiety about school. This is quite understandable but with the right strategies you can ease your anxiety and make this transition phase smoother for both you and your child. These are the things you can do ➡️ Start now to establish a consistent morning routine to help your child prepare. Adjust the wake up time. Wake your child up quite early as for school. ➡️ Frequently have conversations with your child about starting school. Let him or her know he/ she will be starting school soon. You can start this conversation by showing your child the things you've bought in preparation for his school like lunch box, water can, books, school bag, shoes etc ➡️ Begin to allow your child take small steps towards independence like dressing or using the bathroom alone. ➡️ Gradually increase time apart from your child example leaving him / her with a trusted family member. The essence is to help your child detach from you and you too from your child. ➡️ Visit the school you intend to enroll your child. Most schools are still having their summer classes. Meet the teachers and familiarize your child with the school environment before first day. I hope this helps. As the new school year approaches, boosting your child’s confidence can make a world of difference. Parents and caregivers, here’s how you can help: 1. Celebrate Their Strengths: Remind your child of their unique talents and achievements. Encourage them to focus on what they’re good at and to take pride in their abilities. Speak life over your child. Stay away from pointing out any perceived weaknesses. 2. Practice Positive Self-Talk: Teach your child to replace doubts with positive affirmations. Help them create a mantra like, “I am capable and ready to learn!” That is such power in the words that you and your child speak. 3. Prepare Together: Go over their schedule, pick out school supplies, and set goals together. Feeling prepared can ease nerves and build excitement for the year ahead. It's a question we've been getting a lot lately ... 'My child is so unmotivated. What can I do to help?' It's so hard, as a parent, to see our children feeling stuck and unmotivated to do things that they, perhaps, loved to do before. 🙌 Children are naturally highly motivated - just not always in the ways that parents would like! 🛝 It's developmentally appropriate that children prefer to play rather than do homework, tidy their toys, brush their teeth, and much more. 🫤 It's also entirely normal that if you are worried about not being able to do something, or you don't understand why something matters, you procrastinate and find it hard to get started. ✅ So it's important that parents understand how motivation works, and know what they can do to encourage a positive intrinsic motivation in their child, including developing a healthy attitude to learning and mistakes, so their child can feel empowered to engage with their schoolwork and fulfil their potential - and also brush their teeth! Join us to discover the different motivational styles, what affects our child’s levels of motivation and how motivation develops and changes over time. We will look at 5 key ways parents can nurture the best sort of motivation in their child that leads to optimal outcomes. It takes place on Tuesday 5th March at 7:30pm GMT on Zoom.
