“What’s the big hype about taylor swift.. she’s not even that good”.. said a dear male friend of mine who clearly does not like her…and I told him “Your anecdotal experience does not trump statistically significant data” and given that he is a wise guy he took my point gracefully. I read somewhere that ‘Opinion is really the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound purpose larger than the self kind of understanding. ~Bill Bullard’ I have doled out my share of opinions in my life time and I am humbled after reading this.. Artist like Taylor swift and others ( as cited in the article) now have the power to change people’s lives (and I mean economically) beyond thier songs and that’s a contribution worth recognition and celebration .. not criticism …and yet they get trolled in ways their male counterparts never face. Fortunately we live in an age where access to information is easily available … even in a polarised opinionated world.. if you search “ good things about xxx” search ‘bad things about xxx” too so you can make up your own mind… and not get influenced by the algorithm …and then there is data like the below article to support your inference. Here’s to celebrating the wins of these mighty talented women breaking barriers, inspiring young girls and transforming lives through thier songs and music.

So, 7 of 8 artists nominated in 3 major Grammy categories this year — Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year — are women. Women also make up just over half of the eight of this year’s Best New Artist nominees. Dr. Stacy L. Smith, Dr. Katherine Pieper, Karla Hernandez, and Sam Wheeler of USC Annenberg’s Inclusion Initiative found that 2023 was a great year to be a woman in music. ✓ Female artists increased from 30.2% in 2022 to 35% in 2023 ✓ Female producers increased from 3.5% in 2022 to 6.5% in 2023 ✓ Female songwriters increased from 14.1% in 2022 to 19.5% in 2023 ✓ Grammy nominations to women increased from 15.5% in 2023 to 24% in 2024 There’s still miles to go, however. 30 to 1. That’s the degree to which women are outnumbered by men as music producers. 2023 saw men producing 93.5% of all music studied --- women were credited with just 6.5%. This year’s Grammys were all about the power of women! Six years ago, it was #GrammysSoMale. At the 66th awards last night, women dominated the evening. It was #GrammysSoFemale, and well deserved as host Trevor Noah shared, “Women dominated music this year.” They certainly did 👏 Women took home the night’s major awards. Not to mention, Tracy Chapman’s iconic performance of “Fast Car” blew me away. The music industry has come a long way. The USC Annenberg annual music report showed some improvement with an increase in the number of female artists, producers and songwriters credited on the biggest hits of 2023. The number of female recording artists on the year-end Hot 100 grew to 35% in 2023 from about 30% a year ago. Female songwriters also grew over 5%. But across an 11-year span and 1,100 songs, the overall percentage of female artists was 22.3% - a ratio of 3.5 male artists to every 1 female artist. This year’s #Grammys are a testament to progress made, but we still have work to do!

Celebrating Women’s Month with Groundbreaking Research on Women in Live Music In honor of Women's Month, we proudly present a transformative report by Concerts SA, revealing critical insights into the experiences of women in South Africa’s live music industry. This comprehensive study, conducted with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and SAMRO, sheds light on the challenges faced by women in this vibrant sector. This research was made possible by the dedicated efforts of our research team leader, Gwen Ansell, the IKS Cultural Consulting team, and Mbali Ndhlovu of the SheSaidSo organisation The key findings highlight that over 60% of women experience gender-related remarks, and 68% feel unsafe commuting late at night. Despite these challenges, 76% of women report strong family support for their careers, and 90% feel a sense of belonging in their roles. The report advocates for legislative recognition of artistic work, gender quotas, and gender-blind auditions to foster equity and safety. DONNE | Women in Music have released a vital report about women and people of the global majority in composition. It's a damning indictment: from the 111 orchestras assessed over the past year, here are a few of many important findings: ➡ Global Majority Women Representation Falls: Dropped from 2.1% to            1.6%.       ➡ Black Women Composers: Declined from 1.02% to 0.59%.       ➡ White Male Dominance: Works by deceased white men constitute an             overwhelming 78.4%, up from 76.4%. Kudos to the fantastic team at DONNE | Women in Music for their important work. Reports like these show us, starkly, how much more work we have to do and it’s great that that organisations like them are willing to do the work. "Despite years of discussions about the importance of inclusivity, the representation of women and global majority composers in the 2023-2024 season has marginally declined, signalling an urgent need for change in the classical music industry." This year's Grammy Awards was historic for women.    Several women won awards for the first time, such as veterans Miley Cyrus and Victoria Monét, while Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for the 4th time, setting a new record and making her one of the most decorated artists. 7 out of 8 Album of the Year nominees were by women and SZA led with the most nominations. Women also made gains behind the scenes, with women of colour driving the first increase in female songwriting credits in 12 years.    We know that when public wins happen for women such as equal pay in sport for women in sports, we see the ripple effects in our own workplaces. These Grammy wins are historic as the music industry has traditionally been dominated by men. Approximately 96.6% of producers are male whilst only 3.4% are women. In addition, women represent less than a third of top-selling artists in music and only 14% of songwriters. New Post: Latin Artists Fuel Dramatic Growth of Spain’s Live Scene - https://lnkd.in/g8ZpZccT - Thirty-three shows by Latin artists — including Christian Nodal, Camilo, Emilia, Nicki Nicole and Eladio Carrión — are set to take place at the WiZink Center arena in Madrid this year, out of a total of 97 planned concerts. That’s triple the number of shows by Latin artists who performed at the venue in 2019. Nearby, at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, which will soon reopen after a three-plus-year renovation, Mexican star Luis Miguel will be the first artist to play two back-to-back shows at the venue when he headlines in July. The numbers provide a glimpse of Spain’s shifting musical tastes and exploding touring market. According to the country’s Association of Musical Promoters, 2022 ticket revenue reached a record gross of 459 million euros ($492 million); the 2023 Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona drew 500,000 fans over two weekends, according to the concert promoters association. For touring in Spain, the pandemic also demarcated a distinct before and after, with Spanish-speaking acts coming from Latin America and the United States now touring in Spain more than English-speaking acts. “We could, perhaps, consider Rosalía as a precursor since she introduced and popularized internationally style that had not yet fully taken off in Spain and is now incredibly popular and growing day by day,” WiZink Center director Paz Aparicio says.
