For EcoEnergy Insights, a Carrier company, World Environment Day is also an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in communities through our committed sustainability initiatives. One of our initiatives brought out the restoration of Bandhalli Doddakere Lake, in Kolar, India, vital for five nearby villages that rely on it for agriculture. The prolonged neglect and pollution were not just disrupting the water flow, it had long implications on crop yields as well as access to clean water for the villages.    To tackle this issue, we partnered with Biome Environmental Trust and launched a project to revive the lake by desilting, de-weeding, and reconstructing feeders. Our land, Our future In Bandhipur, Karnataka, Jeddiah’s team of 20 villagers, has restored over 1000 hectares of degraded forest lands into healthy habitats for wildlife. The activity, supported by the forest department and a local NGO, is a success story of not only harnessing native intelligence but also providing sustainable livelihood to indigenous people. This story shows how baby steps can make a big difference in the long run. As we celebrate the World Environment Day, with special focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, let’s remember that tapping indigenous knowledge for sustainable farming, embracing regional, seasonal food, judicious use of pesticides and fertilisers, reducing wastages that go into land-fills, are imperative measures to preserve soil health. SOIL is the planet’s most biodiverse habitat, housing 60% of all species on earth. Healthy soil acts as a carbon sink, locking in greenhouse gases that help preserve climate Cities consume 75% of the planet’s resources, produce more than 50% of its global waste and generate at least 60% of greenhouse gas emissions. As urban centres expand, it is the responsibility of people living in cities to embrace a more eco-conscious life.
