It's always fascinating to monitor the downstream impacts the new market has on the second-hand wholesale sector. The eyes tell a tale, but the data does a better job. For example, we have seen a greater than 5x increase in the number of Toyota RAV4 Hybrids sold at Manheim Australia auctions this year, over the same period in 2023. The predominant source of these remarketed RAV4 Hybrids are leasing companies (user-chooser leases) and Government fleets. The timeframe fits: Novated leases tend to last 4 or 5 years, which is how old the first wave of RAV4 Hybrids are. Meanwhile, Government fleet sales on the new side are up more than 30% this year (VFACTS), suggesting increased turnover of older vehicles, feeding the second-hand market. Given the fact that scarcity drives up costs, we have seen wholesale selling prices on RAV4 Hybrids cool by about 14% YoY. This launch follows the delayed rollout of the smaller Ram 1500 pickup — Which has been a sore spot for the brand given pickup trucks are critical to its overall success — Especially as competitors like Ford and Chevy reported steady sales last year. Meanwhile — Ram saw a 19% drop in overall sales for 2024, with a 16% decline for its pickups. “We’ve been getting our ass kicked,” said Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who recently returned to lead the automaker. The return of new-vehicle production and better availability for consumers continues to put downward pressure on used prices, said David Von Paris, director of product and market intelligence at J.D. Power. According to automakers, the nation's car sales have risen by 51%. Car sales from July to November exceeded 50,000 vehicles, up from 33,000 units sold in the same time frame the previous year. Motorcycle sales increased by 26% to 578,000 units, according to manufacturers.
