#formativeassessments vs #summativeassessments #studentcenteredlearning One of the things that I've seen in many #schools is that they don't use formative assessments properly. Formative assessments are the assessments that happen throughout a course. Examples include quizzes, class discussions, and feedback on assignments etc What a lot of schools don't realise is that they should be used to guide teaching in order to improve learning along the way. Unfortunately, a lot of schools only use these tests for end-of-term grading purposes, which is not what they sre intended for. They are intended to guide teaching and learning. They should be used to help teachers understand what students are struggling with and what they're doing well. The goal is to use this feedback to adjust teaching methods and provide extra help where needed. Overall, they help improve learning by giving continuous feedback and support throughout the course. 6 things teachers should AVOID doing to foster a positive learning environment: 📌 Don't put students down or make them feel bad about themselves. This creates a negative atmosphere and discourages learning. 📌 Don't use the same teaching method for all students. Tailor your approach to meet individual needs and learning styles. 📌 Don't ignore students' ideas or feedback. Involve them in the learning process and create a space where they feel heard. 📌 Don't just lecture at students. Make learning interactive and engaging through activities, discussions, and hands-on experiences. 📌 Don't create an overly competitive environment. Focus on collaboration and celebrating individual progress instead of pitting students against each other. 📌 Don't punish mistakes. See them as learning opportunities and create a safe space where students feel comfortable taking risks and trying new things. As a teacher, you are meant to help build up students and not destroy them by your actions or inactions.
