Spring is here (at last) and in the safety world that usually means a couple of things; • More work is being done outdoors, on rooftops and in other places it normally isn't when there is snow on the ground. • Plenty of our clients are bringing in their newest cohort of co-op students and summer students. What both of these things mean is that a greater emphasis on safety is a good idea. And there is a greater need for fall protection. FINALLY we're in a country that is starting to understand the value of those in the trades. I've grown up in this industry and am so proud of the work that my team does. We're responsible for the ventilation systems in laboratories, hospitals, and even the systems you take for granted on a hot day at Disneyland. Our tradespeople matter. My company and our team, as well as the amazing employees of other companies, are the true backbone of this country. Working with your hands should've never become something to be ashamed of, but rather a badge of honor. We CREATE and innovate daily. We use computers, robots, and other technology. We're advanced and rich in skills. I remember clearly when I graduated from Claremont McKenna College, the disdain people had for me after announcing my plans to join the family business at Athena Engineering, Inc.. Everyone was going into government, law, finance, or consulting - there was no room for someone joining the construction industry. Well, I've made room. I continue to make room for more young people, whether they be college-educated, life-educated, or vocational school-educated. There are more than enough high-quality, high-paying jobs for everyone of all backgrounds. The fact that the perception of this industry is changing is because of the fight many of us took on to show its value and worth. Thank you The Wall Street Journal for highlighting the future of our industry. It's looking pretty damn bright. I’m on a team building a cathedral, the bricklayer parable goes. My more than 4 decades in modular construction, has provided that satisfaction to me and many of my colleagues. We leave monuments of our efforts behind us. It appears that Gen Z may believe that staring at a computer screen all day, is not the ideal career nor rewarding after a day’s work. I was surprised to read the WSJ article on the increased interest with trade occupations. In part, I felt its demise was fueling the demand in modular construction. Now perhaps the renewed interest will accelerate it. A brief extract from the article below. “Enrollment in vocational training programs is surging as overall enrollment in community colleges and four-year institutions has fallen. The number of students enrolled in vocational-focused community colleges rose 16% last year to its highest level since the National Student Clearinghouse began tracking such data in 2018…….The median pay for new construction hires rose 5.1% to $48,089 last year. The legendary lawman was quite an interesting character. Judging by this quote it sounds like he had a good understanding of construction as well. Efficiency is king! This industry is investing money at the top to drive efficiency. But the biggest bang for the buck is creating efficiency in the field. I'm not talking about efficiencies on paper, but processes that both save time and energy. Time and energy can never be recouped. Either they can be used productively, wasted, or somewhere in between. When I became an apprentice in the 90s, being good wasn't good enough. The expectation was that you would be good and fast. This drive for speed and efficiency was drilled into me daily. Even down to what others may see as inconsequential was pushed hard. Tool pouches/aprons are always on. What tools do you carry on your person? Where is your toolbox, easy access? Is trash going on the floor or a box/can etc? Do you have everything you need? No return trips to the truck or gang box. I remember being told over and over until it stuck to not use a pencil to mark measurements on drywall. That was a wasted movement! Mark the drywall with your knife you will be using it to cut the drywall anyway. One of the best carpenters that I have ever worked with looked incredibly slow. Almost sloth-like. But he was so efficient, never wasted time or movement, that he would consistently finish before others. Now that this industry has hit the panic button on the labor shortage. Let's not only focus on bringing new people in, But also focus on bringing the right people back, and more importantly, invest in educating and training those who are already lacing up their boots and showing up every day. Well, sat down to write a couple of sentences and there you go.......SMH!
