The first short teaser from our next episode dropping on Monday (26.02). Stay tuned! It is crucial to do animal experiments for science. “If we want to progress in science we have to permit animal experimentation.” Prof. Valentin Nägerl shares his thoughts on this important topic. https://lnkd.in/eMXhvuKD

Yes, Yes, Yes! But use the SSR => sequential stopping rule (Fitts, 2011)! Plan ahead and decide on forehand: if and when you are moving to your next batch of animals. This to take the interim analysis into account in your sample size! From now on your pilot experiment = first batch and can be incorporated in your analysis! So not mini-experiments, but one staged, well-designed, randomized block design! To read more about the SSR start with this article by #DouglasFitts: https://lnkd.in/eNFTn47x
A study from the University of Münster suggests a new way of designing #AnimalResearch experiments by applying Bayesian statistics, in a way that could reduce animal use by performing several mini-experiments instead of bigger single experiments. Calculating the exact number of animals needed in a research study – the sample size - is usually worked out using historical data, but this can often mean either too many, or too few animals are used, leading to unreliable results. In the article, lead researcher Helene Richter, believes there is increasing evidence that animal sample sizes estimated by researchers are actually too small for any valid conclusions to be made. While there’s a small glimmer of hope with a slight decrease in the number of animal experiments, the reality is still devastating: 2.68 million scientific experiments involving living animals were carried out in Great Britain in 2023. We are encouraged by the decrease shown in the latest Home Office statistics and believe this reflects the growing number of scientists who are embracing animal-free methodologies. But more needs to be done. It is clear that the Government should introduce legislation such as Herbie's Law to commit to supporting the phase out of animal experiments, and focus on the development and uptake of humane technologies such as organ-on-a-chip that can replace animals in medical research and confine these distressing annual statistics to the history books, where they belong. #HerbiesLaw #kinderscience

Animal studies fail to predict real human outcomes in 50 to 99.7% of cases. 😕 So why do we keep using these cruel, outdated methods? 🐀 Alternatives such as in vitro testing, advanced computer modelling, and human-patient simulators are proving more ethical and accurate, offering viable replacements to traditional animal testing methods. 🧪 👉 Sign the Pledge to help Make Animal Testing History: drove.com/.2zoc 🐇 🎨: 'barrywrafter' on IG #animaltesting #crueltyfree #artist #veganart #quote

You might have known as FRAME or the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments... But now, it's time for us to (re)introduce ourselves. Hello, we're Replacing Animal Research! New name, new look, same mission: a better world for animals and humans. We remain committed to: - Funding groundbreaking research: We support scientists who are developing innovative, animal-free methods. - Advocating for change: We're collaborating policymakers to ensure that animal research and testing being replaced with more humane alternatives is a top priority. - Empowering researchers: We provide resources and training to help scientists adopt ethical research practices. Want to get involved? Share this post to help spread the word, or drop a comment if you have any questions. Let's work together to ensure a future where no animal suffers for science. #ReplacingAnimalResearch #NAMs #NATs

🚨 In case you missed it, the latest Animals in Science statistics were released by the UK government recently. Of the 1.47 million animal experiments conducted, over 1.28 million were for tackling human diseases or testing treatments for human use. That's more than 87%! What's more, progress has slowed, despite huge public support for an end to animal experimentation. The number of experiments only decreased by 3% in 2023 - this is compared to a 10% drop the year before that. We want to change this and drive forward a focus on replacement in science. "Current debates on the concept of a Culture of Care show that the animal perspective – that is, their agency in the context of experimental research – is largely ignored. It is a major shortcoming of the concept that consideration of animals does not go beyond a broad discussion of wellbeing... If a Culture of Care were to develop in this direction, science could begin to break free from the human-centered viewpoint which still permits, legally and socially, the use of sentient animals in research." The 3Rs of animal research are replacement, reduction, and refinement of animals used in research, teaching, testing, and exhibition. Check out our blog post about this and how SenSV directly helps with the 3Rs https://lnkd.in/eVpQW8hm
