It shows that they are serious about their next step, not just looking to get their foot in the door of any company." When we recruit, we ask "Why Syntech?" We want to know why the candidate to want to work with us, besides "it's a good company or “Local to where I live”. Its impressive when candidates go beyond the first page on the careers site and go into the industrial relations section, go onto the YouTube channel and find something that speaks to them. We want candidates to look at a potential new role like an investment, what they can put into it and contribute versus what they can take away and learn. Is it Ethical? Imagine this scenario: You hire a recruitment company to find talent for your critical opening. You go through the process of signing agreements, sharing the profile, and job description. The recruitment company told you how great they are in finding talent and would be able to help you immediately fill your opening. You have been led to believe that they are going to actively recruit on your behalf. But then, to your surprise: … you discover that the same recruitment company has just reposted your job description ... to the same site you are posting to ... and the only thing they changed was your “company name” to “our client.” How would that make you feel? Betrayed? Disappointed? P*$$*d? This happens all the time and you can see multiple examples everyday just looking at job postings. Is it ethical? Not sure about it being ethical but I do know it’s highly shady and one reason that places a stain on the recruitment industry. How can you justify charging a fee, usually one that is 5 figures, when you are only going to take the same approach as the client but hope to beat them to a qualified candidate? If this is your approach, please reconsider or choose another line of work. Have some pride - do the work you promised. For all the companies out there, that have been duped – I apologize on behalf of all us recruiters who are actually putting in the work and delivering on our promises. 💡 I’ve been speaking to a lot of candidates recently who have been unsuccessful for jobs when sometimes they look fantastic for that position. Sure only 1 person can get the role and there will be lots of unlucky people who were beaten by someone, however I also think that sometimes the issue is down to the actual interview and how the process has been carried out. Sometimes there are managers that need coaching and guidance when developing the interview process and sometimes they lack the experience to access the right skills. 👩💻 There are some great technical tests such as HackerRank and Codility that you can ask a Software Engineer to complete to access their coding skills, however does this mean that someone who scores 95% + is the best person for the job? What about the people you miss who don’t want to do a test only for their CV to be reviewed by a hiring manager and decide they don’t want to progress. A lot of Software Engineers won’t go forward for a role that requires a tech test, especially for contract roles! I often suggest a whiteboarding session or a discussion about software engineering or architecture, talk about real examples and why people use certain tools etc. Spend time to review their GitHub accounts and maybe discuss some of their previous work. I also find in non-technical roles candidates are asked to do presentations that don’t have enough relevance to the role. Are you getting the best out of that individual or do you just want someone with amazing PowerPoint skills? Of course, some roles you need great presentation skills and need to write your own slides! 📢 Recently I was COACHED on interviewing techniques myself when hiring for my own team. I learnt more in 1 coaching session then I did in all the years that I hired people in the past and realised there was room for improvement. People don’t want an easy interview and feel great when they get a role they were really challenged for. Candidates also don’t want to be made to jump through hoops that have no relevance to the role or don’t get to showcase their skills and experience. It’s really important right now to remember CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE. Your brand and organisation will be affected by long convoluted processes. Make sure you give FEEDBACK to people that have taken time to interview with you! Silence is not acceptable and feedback MUST be part of the process.
