Heartfelt Miracles: Duke's Landmark Pediatric Transplant Success Doctors at Duke Health have reported a medical breakthrough with the successful treatment of an infant, Owen Monroe, who underwent the world's first partial heart transplant at 17 days old. Born with a heart defect, Owen's heart valves and arteries were fixed using a first-of-its-kind procedure in the spring of 2022. A partial transplant was chosen to avoid the risks associated with artificial valves or a full heart transplant. The donated heart parts, coming from another living baby needing a full transplant, integrated successfully, and Owen's heart valves and arteries are growing as if they were his own. The procedure, which uses a lower dose of immunosuppressants, has proven to be a one-time fix, and Owen is thriving. The success has paved the way for 12 other children to undergo similar procedures, known as domino heart transplants, where intact valves from a weakened heart are donated to another recipient, and the donor receives a full heart transplant. Doctors at Duke Health are optimistic about the procedure's potential and hope to conduct a clinical trial to further establish its efficacy. https://lnkd.in/g4sHDqqg #HeartTransplantMilestone #InfantHeartHealth #DukeHealth #MedicalInnovation Image Credit: Pixabay

#WorldKidneyDay | When Lisa Cormack’s daughter, Jana, was 4 years old, she went to the pediatrician for a typical preschool physical. A healthy, happy kid, there was no reason to fear anything abnormal or concerning would be discovered as part of the checkup. A lump was found on the young girl’s abdomen, which triggered an immediate fear of kidney cancer. What she was ultimately diagnosed with, however, was autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, or ARPKD. The lack of a defined regulatory path to develop treatments for the disease, is a major reason for limited drug development activity in ARPKD. Enter C-Path’s Polycystic Kidney Disease Outcomes Consortium. PKDOC is a collaborative partnership that includes the PKD Foundation, academic, industry, and regulatory stakeholders whose mission is to support and foster research that will lead to the advancement of treatments for both ARPKD and autosomal dominant PKD. Read the full impact story and learn more about how the Cormack family stays connected to the PKD community: https://lnkd.in/d6cjTJgn. #CPath #PKD #consortium #PKDFoundation #drugdevelopment #datasharing #globalhealth #kidneyhealth #kidneymonth Sorin Fedeles, PhD, MBA Wendy Vanasco Alexander Diegel

Thank you Prof. Maryam for sharing this interesting article titled "Essential Package of Palliative Care for Iranian Children". It outlines the need for a comprehensive palliative care package aimed at enhancing the quality of life for children with cancer in Iran. Based on a study that reviewed literature and consulted experts, it proposes a package focused on both the technical and human elements of care—ranging from medicine and equipment to spiritual support and symptom management. The significance of this study lies in its culturally tailored approach to care. The twofold approach of addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of the child shows a holistic understanding of pediatric care. This essential care package can serve as a critical tool for integrating palliative care into Iran's primary healthcare system, particularly for children with life-threatening conditions like cancer. It's a strong step forward in making compassionate and comprehensive care available to those who need it the most. I congratulate Prof. Maryam and colleagues for this interesting research on a topic where the author have a great experience.

Palliative care can be a scary term to a patient. This publication outlines it nicely in stating that "Palliative care is often confused with hospice care. Palliative care is appropriate at any point in a serious illness and can/should be provided at the same time as and in addition to life-prolonging treatment." It's important for providers to explain that palliative care is not only hospice care but care to improve QOL. Learning that palliative care isn't hospice care has been an education for me and something that patients and providers need to talk about. https://lnkd.in/eXddA5g7

After a Cancer Diagnosis: Tips as You Go Through Treatment and Recovery The American Cancer Society estimates that for the first time, new cases of cancer in the U.S. will cross the 2 million mark in 2024; that’s over 5,000 a day. However, great progress has been made in treating the many forms of the disease. Even with that, cancer can be a frightening illness, and its treatment can be exhausting and uncomfortable. Here are tips to help you or your senior loved one ease their journey through it: 1) Mental health can play an important role in recovery. Anxiety, stress, and depression are often a part of the journey. It’s important to seek help if you need it. Always let your health care provider know how you feel. They likely have recommendations to help, such as a referral to a mental health professional, joining a support group in your community or online, staying physically active, and maintaining social connections. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a helpful resource, offering a free helpline by calling 800-950-NAMI, support group suggestions, and a wealth of information. 2) Keep moving even if you don’t feel like it. Physical activity boosts overall health, including mental health. Start small and build over time. Begin with a short walk. Do some stretches several times a day. If you have stairsteps, try a trip or two up and down each day. Join a yoga or tai chi class when you’re up for it. If you need help with any exercises, ask.
