On New Year's Eve my wife and I went to our favorite steak house. We go here at least twice a year. It was one of the first places we went when we started dating so it holds sentimental value. On this particular night something was different. Everything seemed rushed. The waitstaff, bartenders, chefs were so focused on speed to accommodate the volume of patrons that the quality was not what it had always been. We left questioning the next time we would be back. Takeaways: (1) don't sacrifice quality for quantity/speed of work. (2) the most loyal customers can begin questioning the partnership even after 1 bad experience. #RMS

The top 3 things working at The Keg Steakhouse + Bar taught my brother and I in sales and service. My brother and I started our hospitality journey when we were 15 years old. The Keg was one of our learning stomping grounds in sales and service early in our careers as we turned legal age. Here’s the top 3 things it taught us as servers and bartenders: 1) Customer Service is something you have to genuinely love doing. People can tell when you intent is sincere in helping them have an amazing experience. 2) Products Knowledge is only half the equation to be a great server. You must be just as good at Suggestive Selling. 3) Upselling is a tool to help make the dining experience better…. But you have to know how to do it properly. Get this right and you will be successful at selling in any industry. I’ll never forget Mother’ Day Brunch 2008 at the Keg. We both worked a 9 hour shift and walked away with over $600 each in tips AFTER we tipped out our staff for a phenomenal job they’d done. And I’ll tell you what…. I made that money certainly not due to my good looks 😄…. But genuinely loving what I was doing and creating a memorable dining experience for my guests that day. At least 3-4 times during my serving years, had guests say to me “you tell me what tip I should give since you did a great job”. You better believe it was more than 20% 😉 Moral of the story…..
