National Circular Economy Stakeholder Dialogue – Manufacturing Event On October 11, 2024, we gathered for the National Circular Economy Stakeholder Dialogue, co-facilitated by our Managing Director, Nobantu A Mtimde. The event served as a crucial platform for discussing the urgent need to transition South Africa’s manufacturing sector towards a more sustainable, circular economy. Objectives of the Dialogue: • Initiate Cross-Sectoral Discussions: Foster knowledge exchange about the circular economy across various sectors. • Raise Awareness: Enhance understanding of circular economy principles and interventions as development tools for South Africa. • Collaborative Platform: Bring together a diverse set of stakeholders to discuss circularity and share insights. • Feedback on Regulatory Support: Gather input from stakeholders on the regulatory or policy needs to promote circularity. Key Discussions Focused on: • Sector Revitalisation: The decline in the manufacturing sector’s GDP contribution from 20% in 1993 to 13% in 2020 signifies the urgent need for revitalisation. • Resource Inefficiencies: Addressing significant resource inefficiencies presents opportunities to improve energy and material usage. • Circular Economy Potential: The potential of the circular economy to enhance resource security, create jobs, and promote environmental sustainability was a central theme. • Policy Support Needs: Calls for better policy and regulatory support, particularly regarding compliance with the upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), were emphasised. • Technological Adoption: Encouraging the adoption of technologies such as data observatories for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions can facilitate compliance and enhance operational efficiencies. • Support for Local Entrepreneurs: Emphasising the importance of supporting township artisans and small-medium enterprises (SMMEs) as crucial drivers of innovation and local job creation. Have you read the Circular Economy Landscape map for Kenya ? The Circular Economy Catalyst provides numerous insights that can inform intervention plans by the different support entities. For example, in the area of emergent opportunities to provide a conducive environment for enterprises to thrive, Policy and regulatory environment has really grown with initiatives such as the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR),  the Kenya Green Fiscal Incentives Policy, the National Plastics Action Plan, the Draft National Circular Economy Policy among others. Consultations that have taken place on 25-26 November 2024 in Bangkok served as key preparatory events for the upcoming High-Level 12th Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum in Asia-Pacific to be hosted by the Government of India. 🎯 Organized by UNDESA/UNCRD and United Nations ESCAP, these consultations focused on advancing best practices in #3R and #circulareconomy while addressing emerging sustainable consumption and production issues. During ASEAN consultations, member countries reviewed the 📄 draft Declaration, identifying high-priority topics relevant to national and regional contexts. SWITCH-Asia Official also played a role in refining the Declaration’s framework, contextualizing its goals, and fostering partnerships for a stronger and more relevant agreement. Input from other sub-regions, such as the Pacific and LLDCs, further enriched the process. 🔰 The final Declaration, a voluntary, non-binding agreement, will promote “3R and circular economy goals for resource-efficient, clean, resilient, sound material-cycle, and low-carbon societies.” It is set for adoption in March 2025. Sustainable Consumerism: Transforming Consumption Patterns in Africa Sustainable consumption is redefining economies worldwide, and Africa is no exception. As consumers become more conscious of their environmental impact, businesses across the continent are adapting to meet this growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products. The global green economy is projected to reach $12 trillion by 2030, and Africa has a significant opportunity to claim its share by adopting sustainable practices in production and consumption. African consumers are increasingly prioritizing products that align with their values, such as organic food, fair-trade coffee, and sustainable fashion. Recycling initiatives and the circular economy model are creating new opportunities for businesses while reducing waste. Digital platforms are amplifying these efforts by connecting consumers with sustainable goods and services, fostering a culture of environmentally conscious consumption. However, challenges remain in scaling sustainable practices. High costs of sustainable materials deter widespread adoption, particularly among SMEs, while limited consumer awareness about sustainability constrains market growth. These obstacles highlight the need for education campaigns and financial incentives to promote green production and consumption. Governments and private sector stakeholders must work together to create policies that incentivize sustainable practices, such as tax breaks for eco-friendly initiatives or grants for green startups. Sustainable consumerism is not just an environmental imperative but also a driver of long-term economic growth.
