Phil Jacob and I created WAVZE to help sports organisations ‘soundtrack’ their universe. We make it easy, safe and affordable to access authentic music, often made by talented fans of a team or sport (like Prose in this case) in order to deliver authentic sounds that resonate with your fanbase and to help attract new fans (particularly genZ/genAlpha). We want to transform sport’s relationship with music from an afterthought, a cost and a complex liability into an opportunity to engage with fans and a high value IP asset for value and revenue generation. OKTAGON MMA , via WAVZE, are at the vanguard of a new paradigm in sport’s relationship with music and artist-fans. This paradigm is about mirroring how sport approaches every other exploitable, customer/fan facing experience within its universe - EXCEPT MUSIC!! ie. Develop it, produce it, own it, control it, protect it, package it and exploit it!! Ed Shearan (Ipswich Town), Stormzy ( Man United)and Noel and Liam Gallagher (Man City) - to name but a few - were fans and talented, struggling musicians long before they became superstars… imagine if these clubs had ‘signed’ these artists, helped them on their way, introduced their music to their global fanbase… this is why Phil and I created WAVZE - to help #Soundtrackyoursport to help develop and exploit your audio universe. Bravo Pavol Neruda Ondřej Novotný and all at OKTAGON MMA #sportsbusiness #sportsmarketing #musicbusiness #ISC #sportspro #leadersinsport
WE'LL MAKE HISTORY - OKTAGON OFFICIAL ANTHEM 🎵 Do you know that Ondřej and Pavol talked about doing our own anthem since the first OKTAGON? Even before the very first tournament, Palo was in touch with a Slovak band. Unfortunately, this vision had to be postponed, because with the first tournament and the creation of OKTAGON, as we know it today, many responsibilities took precedence. While Palo was at a conference in Madrid, he met WAVZE, a company that creates music for companies, for various events and matches (from FIFA, pre-NBA to UFC, etc.) and things started moving again. "We received a list of artists from which we chose one - Prose, who suited us with his positive attitude. It radiated what we wanted to convey to the world. It took about 6 months to create the final version. Now it's here and we feel great about it. The more I listen to the anthem, the more I get excited about it," said Palo. It's a great element that connects the fans to the brand. We've felt very connected to them at OKTAGON since the beginning, and the anthem is something we've been missing. We hope you like it! #WeAreOktagon #MMA #OKTAGON

Director, School of Kinesiology and Karen Wax Schmitt and Family Endowed Professor, Louisiana State University (LSU)
Here is the abstract to my new chapter with Derek Catsam "Chasing Snakes: Whiteness, White Privilege and Sport" in the Handbook of Critical Whiteness (Springer Nature, in print soon). Thanks for the opportunity Professor Jioji Ravulo! Abstract This chapter explores white privilege in sport which has had global implications for a long time. To understand why white privilege remains so powerful and hard to relinquish, it is important to understand historical frameworks of global power and processes that began in the imperial/colonial era whereby Western (and by implication white) body culture practices were inscribed onto colonized (and by implication black) bodies, simultaneously replacing and subverting local physical cultural practices. We examine these in various contexts in order to unpack how whiteness and white privilege have shaped sporting discourses globally. Keywords #Race, #racism, #apartheid, #JimCrow, #UnitedStates, #SouthAfrica, #trackandfield #athletics, #AmateurAthleticsUnion, #whiteness, #whitesupremacy

IT'S NOT RIGHT, AND NOT FAIR TO TREAT ANYONE IN THIS WAY ! Race does not biologically exist, yet how we identify with race is so powerful, it influences our experiences and shapes our lives. In a society that privileges white people and whiteness, racist ideas are considered normal throughout our media, culture, social systems, and institutions. Historically, racist views justified the unfair treatment and oppression of people of color (including enslavement, segregation, internment, etc.). We can be led to believe that racism is only about individual mindsets and actions, yet racist policies also contribute to our polarization. While individual choices are damaging, racist ideas in policy have a wide-spread impact by threatening the equity of our systems and the fairness of our institutions. To create an equal society, we must commit to making unbiased choices and being antiracist in all aspects of our lives. No one is born racist or antiracist; these result from the choices we make. Being antiracist results from a conscious decision to make frequent, consistent, equitable choices daily. These choices require ongoing self-awareness and self-reflection as we move through life. In the absence of making antiracist choices, we (un)consciously uphold aspects of white supremacy, white-dominant culture, and unequal institutions and society. Being racist or antiracist is not about who you are; it is about what you do. To Create an Equal, Safe, Strong and Positive Society, We Must Commit to Making Unbiased Choices and Being Antiracist in All Aspects of Our Lives. Thank you. Dr. Ammar Ali

Wonderful post about how language matters. We want to recognize the barriers various groups of people face to create equitable and inclusive communities. By not “seeing” a certain group, you are erasing that experience and those unique barriers. An intersectional approach looks at the full picture of unique experiences and how we can create equitable strategies accordingly.

“I am not racist because I don’t see colour/race.” (I know, it’s triggering.) Before Black History Month wraps up, we need to leave weaponizing and cherry-picking Martin Luther King Jr.’s (MLK) words to justify inaction or worse — colourblindness behind. ❌ The idea of a colourblind society may be well-intentioned, but it is an illusion of inclusion. It leaves people without the language to discuss race and examine their own biases. Colourblindness relies on the concept that race-based differences don’t exist and ignores the realities of systemic racism. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, where he said that he wanted people to see his kids for the content of their character, not the colour of their skin – has resulted in some folks misinterpreting what he meant. They don’t seem to understand that his speech is a call to action for each of us to move from indifference to intentionally creating racial equity. ✔️He meant that you should not JUDGE someone based on the colour of their skin – but you should SEE who they are. Because if you can’t see someone’s lived experiences – how can you see them as a person? Race is such an ingrained social construct. To pretend it doesn’t exist erases the experiences of Black and racialized people and is just logically impossible. 🤦🏾♀️ ❌ Let’s shift our perspectives. Not seeing someone's race is not the goal. It used to be, but not today. 🗣️ Because if you don’t see my race, you don’t see me. ✔️The goal is to see the real experiences of others, understand why their stories are not heard in society, and work to respect our differences. #BlackHistoryMonth2024 #BHM365 #AntiBlackRacism #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #RealAllyship #Allyship #RacialGaslighting #InclusionFactor
