Have you been utilizing National Mentoring Month as an opportunity to strengthen your mentoring skills and relationships? National Mentoring Month is a nationwide campaign dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the positive impact of mentoring relationships. It’s an excellent opportunity to reflect on your progress and set new goals. Even if you haven’t taken advantage of these opportunities this month, good news: it’s still only the beginning of the year. Consider how you can implement the following initiatives throughout the rest of January and beyond: → Reflect on your journey. Take some time to discuss the highs and lows of your mentoring relationship so far. What achievements have you reached? What challenges have you worked through? Reflecting on these moments will help you and your mentoring partner understand how far you’ve come. → Set new goals. What areas of personal or professional development do you want to focus on as a mentee? If you're a mentor, what are your goals for helping your mentee grow? Defining these goals will help set a clear direction for your mentoring relationship. → Plan to attend or host an event. Many organizations will host events in January—and throughout the year—to celebrate mentoring, offering valuable learning and networking opportunities. Consider attending a virtual or in-person event with your mentoring partner, or even host a small workshop in your organization to spotlight the importance of mentoring. International Mentoring Day January 17, 2025   International Mentoring Day take place on the 17th January every year and is a global observance dedicated to recognising and promoting the invaluable practice of mentoring. Since 2017, this day has been observed during National Mentoring Month. It takes place on the birthday of boxing legend and global humanitarian Muhammad Ali. A day of international conversation on social media where photos, videos and messages of powerful mentoring stories are shared. Ali's legacy is the inspiration for the day—specifically his six core principles of confidence, conviction, dedication, respect, giving and spirituality. This day honours the impactful relationships between mentors and mentees, highlighting the significant role that mentoring plays in personal and professional development. International Mentoring Day serves as a platform to share success stories, best practices, and to encourage more people to become mentors. It’s a celebration of the guidance, support, and empowerment that mentors provide, and the positive changes they foster in individuals and communities. This observance is also an opportunity to acknowledge the diverse forms of mentoring, including peer mentoring, academic mentoring, and career mentoring, and to appreciate the dedication of mentors who invest their time and expertise for the growth of others. Happy International Mentoring day ! Where would we be without mentors ? Ever since the original Mentor, who was tasked with looking after Odysseus' son, Telemachus, whilst he was away at the Trojan war, thousands if not millions of people have benefitted from having somebody to help them on their life's journey. Mentors can take many forms and in many types of relationships. There are formal mentors, usually in a business environment, where a more experienced person passes on their wider knowledge to a less-experienced employee. There are informal mentoring relationships where you might not even call it a mentoring relationship but where either or both parties learn or learn from each other. A mentoring relationship may last only a few weeks, or it can happen over many years. Rarely do mentors get compensated for what they do. Often it is just part of the job and is expected of many supervisors and managers. Most are only too willing to share their hard-earned knowledge to help a younger less experienced colleague. Their reward is seeing the other person grow and develop just as they grew and developed through their mentors. I have had many different mentors during my two score years and ten on this planet. It is very difficult to quantify the effect that they have had on my life but I am certain that I wouldn't have achieved half of what I have achieved without their help. They are also too numerous to mention and I wouldn't attempt to do so for fear of omitting somebody. What I do want to do, on International Mentoring Day, is to recognise the contribution that all mentors make to hale people develop and make the world a better place.
