Does the explosive rise of data centers spur the demand of hard disk drives? We can't be 100% certain but it is definitely an exciting moment for all HDD players. Just a stone's throw away from Unisteel Technology Limited's Malaysia factory, what used to be empty land is now the construction site of a massive data center. Many of the components we produce will soon be housed within this gigantic building. Over the past 12 to 18 months, a cluster of data centres has rapidly emerged in the southern Malaysian state. The four large data centre parks — Nusajaya Tech Park, Sedenak Tech Park (STeP), YTL Green Data Centre, and Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park — have become home to a mix of hyperscalers and data centre operators, showcasing the region’s dynamism and potential.

Investors can earn stable and sustainable returns in Japan's data centre market despites challenges around power constraints and labor shortages, while Korea’s demand and supply dynamics have resulted in favourable valuations and cap rates for data centre assets. Industry experts from ESR Group, Gaw Capital Partners, and DC Byte highlighted the continued growth in digital infrastructure demand in both markets. In recent years, Malaysia has emerged as a data centre powerhouse in the Asia-Pacific region, driven by a global surge in demand and an established data centre sector. With favourable conditions such as the availability of land, cheaper electricity, and an advantageous geographical location, the country has attracted numerous firms to establish data centre operations within its borders. As interest surged, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (KL:TENAGA), the national electricity provider in Malaysia, responded by launching the Green Lane Pathway initiative in 2023 to streamline power approvals for data centres, reducing lead time from three to four years to as short as 12 months.

Singaporean asset manager Keppel Ltd. and Vietnamese conglomerate Sovico Group are discussing plans for new undersea fiber-optic cables that would boost the region's data centre industry. Southeast Asian countries, a major junction for cables connecting Asia to Europe, are seeking to expand their networks to meet booming demand for AI services and data centres. Vietnam alone plans to have 10 new submarine cables by 2030.

Keppel plans to significantly increase its data centre funds under management (FUM) and capacity in response to the AI boom. The company aims to double its data centre FUM from S$9 billion (US$6.80 billion) to S$19 billion and expand its capacity from 650 megawatts (MW) to 1.2 gigawatts (GW), driven by rising demand for digital infrastructure as businesses adopt AI technologies. The Asia-Pacific region has seen substantial data centre investments, notably with a Blackstone-led consortium acquiring AirTrunk for US$16 billion. Keppel is well-positioned for this expansion due to its advantageous power access, technological expertise, and strong relationships with hyperscalers. Currently, Keppel operates 35 data centres in major hubs across Asia-Pacific and Europe and is involved in initiatives like the Bifrost Cable System, which connects Singapore to North America. Additionally, Keppel reported stable underlying net profit for the nine-month period ending September 30, with recurring income rising 14% from asset management and operational contributions. <Japan Investment Information> U.S. investment company Asia Pacific Land (APL) announced on Thursday that it will build data centers with a total receiving capacity of 300 megawatts in southern Japan's Fukuoka prefecture, which is expected to be the largest such cluster on the southernmost main island of Kyushu. Six data centers will be built in a roughly 122,000-square-meter area in Itoshima city. Welcome to the #datacentre party in #southeastasia. #malaysia, #indonesia, #singapore, #vietnam and #thailand are spearheading the data-centre boom, but each faces infrastructure and environmental hurdles amid the skyrocketing demand. Data centres are big resource guzzlers, consuming vast amounts of water globally, mainly for cooling. A typical 100 megawatt (MW) facility, for instance, can use around 4.2 million litres of water daily – equivalent to the needs of a city of 10,000 residents. Their energy appetite is just as massive. With the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution gaining momentum, Goldman Sachs Research projected in May that data-centre power demand will surge by 160 per cent by 2030.
