Yesterday was Wolrd Health Day. The World Health Organization celebrated it with a powerful campaign “My health, my right”. This year's theme advocates for universal access to quality healthcare, education, clean water and air, nutritious food, adequate housing, decent work, a healthy environment, and freedom from discrimination. This serves as an essential reminder for those fortunate to maintain their health with minimal effort: appreciate this privilege. Emphasizing prevention is crucial. The minor actions we tend to ignore until facing health challenges should not be delayed. Prioritize your health now. Consistent, small habits are key to significant life improvements.

Public health goes beyond local health departments and immunizations. At the foundation of the public's health is nutrition and wellness. Yesterday, Sen. Ron Johnson from Wisconsin hosted a roundtable discussion with the world's greatest health advocates including Calley Means, Casey Means, Vani Hari, Alex Clark, and Courtney Swan to raise awareness of the need to change government nutrition policies, marketing and funding of big food companies, treatment recommendations, and how to truly support patient health. WATCH HERE: https://lnkd.in/g6bEUigE I highly recommend following these leaders on social media to learn more about their "why" for diving deep for us.

Public health infrastructure, which includes the workforce, provides the foundation for all public health services - including developing vaccines, treating chronic illnesses, responding to public health emergencies, and even ensuring you don't get sick after brushing your teeth 😅. Post-Covid, the importance of a strong, competent public health workforce is ever more apparent. Through literature review, surveys, and interviews, I will examine the impact of global outbreaks on the public health workforce and identify lessons for future preparedness. I will present a portion of my findings at the APHL Annual Conference in Milwaukee this May!
If you brushed your teeth this morning and didn’t get sick, you’re benefiting from public health infrastructure. Keep this in mind as you move through your day - driving around on paved roads in a car that has been crash tested, eating food that isn’t expired or contaminated with pathogens, meeting your friend at a coffee shop that isn’t a cloud of cancer-causing, asthma irritating tobacco smoke. That is public health. It’s not flashy, fancy, or super high-tech. In fact, if it’s working well, it’s barely noticeable. But it keeps you and your loved ones alive and thriving without so much as a thought. Happy National Public Health Week! Be sure to shoutout all of the heroes of public health in your life this week!

https://lnkd.in/gyVERSYP This starts tonight. Whatever your source is for viewing, please watch, record, or stream, if available. We must become more aware of and know the value of public health. Our lives, lifespan, and state of wellness are directly connected to PUBLIC HEALTH. If you want to be more familiar with the term public health, watch. If you fiercely believe as an individual that what you do is or should be no matter for others to consider, watch. If you don't really care about what happens to you ("what will be will be") but do care about others that touch your life, watch. If you question "why", watch. Watch.

Making the world a better place, one "Did you know?" at a time. Passionate about science communication, ecology, food systems, & livable communities. (B.Sc. Environmental Science)
Public health, public safety & infrastructure is a backbone of society. Listen to scientists. Trust scientists. Learn more about how science interacts with uncertainty in very structured ways to inform decisions that keep us safe. Currently reading The Poison Squad, about the history of US Food Safety research & the struggles passing legislation It's interesting to see how the conversations around "pure food" were going on over 125yrs ago, and how difficult it was to get tiny wins (e.g. no formaldehyde in milk!)
