If you are a Canadian writer or artist, this message is for you: Canadian arts is heavily funded by all branches of government. It's actually something Canada does exceedingly well. But all of that can change in an instant. If you care about sustaining and increasing funding to the arts, you need to message your MP. Ask them if they plan on supporting increased funding for the arts or decreased funding. Let them know they will not receive your vote if they support any kind of decrease. If you care about arts in Canada, you need to act and you need to act now. If you do not know who your MP is, simply Google "Who is the MP for (write your neighbourhood here)." Their contact is public and you can reach out to them directly. Do not leave this to chance. If you need more guidance on this, connect with the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada And no, Canada Council did not ask me to post this. I simply see the writing on the wall and want to make sure we write a different story.

English abstract of my book "Qui sont les acteurs culturels ? Une typologie des situations stratégiques dans le champ culturel et créatif" The countless actors in the artistic, cultural and creative field are extraordinarily varied, not only by virtue of their offerings (visual arts, music, live performance, media, design, video games, museums, etc.), but also in terms of their size, funding, level of reputation, long term survival... The “Cultural and Creative Player” (acronym CP; in French, AC for “acteur culturel et créatif”) is a unit acting and offering intermediate or final goods or services. It can be an individual acting in his or her own name (artist, composer, writer, journalist…) or an organization in any legal form (public, private, for-profit or not-for-profit). The purpose of a general typology is to give both a global vision of a field and a classification of its component units. Seven types of CPs have thus been defined: Institutional, Recognized, Fragile, Independent, Specialist, Financialized and Conglomerate. The methodology is based on qualitative observations of 193 CPs operating in 20 European countries (including American CPs active there). However, by reasoning in terms of trajectories (i.e. CPs that shift from one type to another), it gives a dynamic vision of the cultural and creative field.

Book Recommendation: There are moments, while perusing the pages of history, that one feels the unspeakable pain endured by those who are caught in the tumult of war. In the hearts of countless innocent souls, the scars of conflict run deep, even though they bear no direct hand in the strife. Yet, it is they who suffer, embodying the anguish and trials thrust upon them by forces beyond their control. I have often reflected on the finite nature of human life. How much of our time, instead of being spent in peace and growth, is consumed by trials and tribulations, which bring nothing but suffering? In these pages, I was moved by the work, 'The Pianist of Yarmouk,' which narrates the tale of a man amidst the ruins, finding solace and expression in music, even as chaos reigns around him. It speaks of the strength of the human spirit, that even in the depths of despair, one finds a way to rise above the ashes. The author shares the poignant story of that widely-circulated photograph—of a man in a shirt, playing his piano amidst the rubble. Yet, as is often the case, a photograph can capture a moment but not the depth of the experience. What happened before and what followed after, lies beyond the frame, in a world of indescribable pain and yet, in that very moment, a flicker of hope. Language is political, subjective and evolves over time, so when silence AND speaking out can both be interpreted as violence, it might feel like arts boards and organisations simply cannot win. We need to choose our words with care. Intriguing new research article out, developing the methodology, exploring the power of song and songwriting as a collaborative, human endeavour. It's a strong methodological piece that can also inspire research in other practice based domaines
Songcraft, Qualitative research, Ethnography. Social, Environmental, Cultural advocacy + Value-based communication
Today marks one year since the defense of my PhD “Songs in the Key of Collaboration” 👨🎓 ;-) The thesis was a monograph, and now the first scientific article from the work has been accepted for publication in International Journal of Qualitative Inquiry (2024): "Working in the Key of Collaboration: Songwriting and alternative ethnography as research practice." (Hit me up for the pre-print, if you fancy). It has been a crazy and wonderful year with many new connections made in/through song. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity so speak/sing at several conferences and seminars. In particular come to mind: - “Saved by a Song” conference in UK (https://lnkd.in/dhwB_Kqi), -“Transformative Connections: Building Diverse Relations for a Just Green Transition ” in Denmark (https://lnkd.in/eTS4YQXS) - “USN Bærekraft - Annual Sustainability Conference” in Norway (https://lnkd.in/dTkuQYHz) - “International Symposium of Autoethnography and Narrative” in the US (https://lnkd.in/dWPz6u6b) - “The Nordic Folk Alliance in Denmark (https://lnkd.in/dfguaqqr) ALSO: The album ”Songs in the Key of Collaboration” holding 10 songs from my ethnographic fieldwork is now available for streaming: https://lnkd.in/dPwKRCvh There are also physical copies available (digi-packs) with an extensive booklet detailing backgrounds to the songs. More info here: https://lnkd.in/dzhzA-Ef And here: https://lnkd.in/deAS5pVf A heartfelt thanks to all collaborators who have made all this possible. Now, looking forward to all the upcoming events and collaborations (Songwriting seminars in Västervik, Sweden, and Samsø, Denmark) for starters. Reach out if you want to start a conversation or continue one we already have started 😉
