How the situation in the Red Sea impacts Suez Canal crossings According to #AIS data, there has been a 60% decrease in tankers and cargo vessel port calls at the Suez Canal during the first two weeks of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Although sailing through Suez Canal saves a lot of money and time rather than going around Cape of Good Hope, but a lot of shipowners and operators prefer to re-route their vessels to avoid the tensions in Red Sea. What legal impacts may these decisions have specially on following points:   1) how parties rights and obligations are affected if the vessel is under voyage or time charterparty 2) how standard form and clauses such as VOYWAR and CONWARTIM can help in this situation; 3) who bears additional costs; and 4) what H&M and P&I issues shall be considered and how covers should be modified.   These are the main issues i am asked these days by companies facing these decisions, as well as those that have experienced incidents in the region.
