Having joined the fire service in late 1999, I was on less than 18 months when Bret Tarver, Phoneix Fire, died in the line of duty on March 14, 2001. His death had a profound impact on rapid intervention training (and similar) and firefighter self-rescue. A basic rule for fire protection was not considered: fire separation respectively adequate space separation. Also Standards not considered such as VdS, NFPA855 or FM.
