It's often said that democratic forms of government are being challenged in many countries worldwide, with, it seems, an increasing number of people showing an openness to authoritarian forms of leadership. If people lose faith in democracy, what are our options? But how did democracy evolve in Aotearoa and what did it replace? This post in the NZ Colonial History series describes how citizens took steps to create a new democratic colonial society from the belief that old elitist forms of government that they had previously experienced were no longer acceptable.

ICYMI: Innovate Illinois recently announced its support for Richland Community College’s application for the Recompete Pilot Program Phase 2, submitted to the Economic Development Administration (EDA). This initiative seeks a transformative $47M grant aimed at fortifying workforce development and economic resilience in Decatur. Richland's proposed project, Workforce Opportunities for Resilient Communities (WORC), targets pivotal economic and workforce development through direct intervention in education, training and job preparation, particularly within Decatur’s urban core which has faced historical employment challenges. Too often, the evidence we collect about families to use in policy and service development focuses on one or two types of family. We know that families in Australia are much more diverse than is considered in public debate and public policy. The Uniting Families Report is a new partnership between Uniting and UNSW Social Policy Research Centre, providing annual insights into the experiences of families raising children and young people in Australia. Better research and understanding of families will inform understanding and drive better policy reform. The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO)'s Research Foundation's Economic Development District (EDD) Community of Practice recently launched an online resource called "Solving the Housing Puzzle: EDDs as Regional Housing Changemakers."
