Dear Young Chemical Engineers, starting the career with profound information of basic process engineering is the first step-stone. For this, a thorough understanding of PFDs & PIDs is essential. I have seen people working in plant operations for years and yet unable to understand & differentiate between PFDs, PIDs, & other relevant drawings. This article is all about understanding the basics of information mentioned above. https://lnkd.in/e7sWa-9k

What is Process Engineering and What Do Process Engineers Do? The term “process” can be defined simply as a way to make a product from raw materials. The process engineer’s job is to select process steps for product manufacturing and the required specifications. There will be several processes to make the same product. The best way to manufacture a product has not yet been discovered and it cannot be said that the product can be manufactured in one way only. Process engineers are facing alternative solutions to a production problem. This possibility arises from a combination of factors such as information, imagination, knowledge, and experience obtained from past processes. However, the economics of production is the key to finding the most optimized process. Therefore, innovation, Ideas, and cost-effectiveness are key elements of process engineering. What is Process Engineering? Process engineering is the understanding and application of the basic principles and laws of nature that enable humans to transform raw materials and energy into products useful to society on an industrial scale. By taking advantage of natural forces such as pressure, temperature, concentration gradients, and the law of conservation of mass, process engineers can develop methods to synthesize and purify desired chemical products in large quantities. Process engineering deals with the design, operation, control, optimization, and enhancement of chemical, physical and biological processes. What is the key difference between Chemical Engineering and Process Engineering? For all practical purposes, it makes no difference, process engineers are often chemical engineers. A chemical engineer does not have to be a process engineer, but can be a project engineer or project manager. A process engineer in the E&C business is a chemical engineer who practices chemical engineering, designs processes, and performs unit operations in the petroleum refining, petrochemical, food processing, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, and gas processing industries.

Chemical Engineering Graduate, if you are start working at any process plant and you want to familiarise with the unit you need to take care, start find documents below; 1. Process Design Basis - info - you need to find this document when you enter specific plant - this document describe about design unit capacity at excess design, full load & turndown (minimum), design feed, design product spec, type of cases considered 2. Process Flow Diagram (PFD) and Heat & Material Balance (HMB) - showing major process flow of the unit and what is the parameters and component for each stream 3. Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) including the legends 4. Operation, Inspection and Maintenance (OIM) - a document describe on the unit function, how to perform startup, shutdown and what to do during emergency, main process control description, the required maintenance in the unit. 5. Process Control Narrative - description of process control scheme available in the unit and their calculation block 6. Safeguarding Narrative and Cause & Effect Matrix (C&E) - knowing the type of safeguarding available in the unit and how it work if triggered. You may need to have Instrument Protective Function (IPF) to refer how SIL was rated 7. HAZOP/PHA - to understand what risk of the unit and available safeguard 8. Alarm setpoint and COPSOL - Ready to know what alarm available and which alarm are critical. You may need to have Alarm Rationalisation sheet for understanding. 9. Integrity Operating Window (IOW) - The allowable range to operate to ensure corrorion rate is within the target. Credict to Ts. Khusairi Kamarudin for the input. I will be glad if somebody share this to me during earlier time in my career. What other document you think shall be refer when you entering a new plant? Pucture credict to Corso System

A Towering Experience: My First Ascent to a 150ft Distillation Column As a process operator at an olefin plant in Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals Limited, I've always been fascinated by the towering structures that define our industry. However, until the recent plant turnaround, I'd never had the opportunity to physically experience the scale and complexity of these engineering marvels. During the maintenance period, I was tasked with performing a leak test on a 150ft distillation column. This presented a unique chance to climb to the top and witness firsthand the intricate network of pipes, valves, and instruments that make up this critical piece of equipment. Standing at the base of the column, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. While I've always had a passion for climbing, the sheer height of the structure was daunting. Fortunately, my childhood love of adventure and exploration helped me overcome any fear of heights. As I ascended the column, I was struck by the incredible engineering that went into its construction. Every detail, from the sturdy steel framework to the precise alignment of the components, was a testament to the skill and dedication of the engineers involved. My experience climbing the distillation column was more than just a physical challenge; it was a profound reminder of the importance of engineering in our world. These towering structures are the backbone of modern industry, enabling us to produce the essential products and materials that drive our economy. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have climbed this column and to have gained a deeper appreciation for the engineering behind it. It's an experience that I'll never forget, and one that has further fueled my passion for working in the process industry. #ProcessEngineer #processoperator #oilandgas
