Storytime from the perspective of a physician-patient: As a patient, I remember a tough stretch in the hospital when I hadn’t slept in what felt like days. Every couple of hours, there were interruptions for blood draws and other things. 🩺💉 I had been stable (this was post-transplant), but the lack of sleep was getting to me. I finally spoke up, and my doctor did something that made all the difference— he asked the staff to hold off on waking me up for at least six hours that night, unless there was an emergency. That experience really stuck with me. It showed me that while medical care is important, it’s also CRITICAL to listen to your patient’s needs beyond the treatments + tests. 🙌 Sometimes, what the body needs most is something simple. For me that night, it came in the form of rest. Now, as both a physician and an advocate, I always keep that in mind. Joyful Palliative Care. I love this phrase because it is nuanced and feels contradictory even though it isn’t. I envision Joyful Palliative Care as an attitude, an approach, and a community of clinicians who care for the ill and aging while being both heart-centered and badass! My first Joyful Palliative Care clinician program starts in 4 days and I’m SO excited. I’ll let you know how it goes and I definitely plan to run it again. This feels like a direction that I’m being led towards that will allow me to use my skills in palliative care, clinician wellbeing, positive intelligence coaching, and just being a human. Also maybe there is also space for creative arts and my occasional potty mouth 🙂. I’ve just started an Instagram called @joyfulpalliativecare. If this whole idea speaks to you, will you follow me? There are 5 whole posts 😂. More will be coming! This path is calling to me so I’m going to follow it, even though there are so many other cool and interesting paths that also call to me.
